7stanes mountain biking centres, South Scotland

The 7stanes are seven mountain biking centres spanning the south of Scotland, from the heart of the Scottish Borders to Dumfries and Galloway. 'Stane' is the Scots word for stone, and at each of the 7stanes locations, you'll find a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend. The 7stanes are all Forestry Commission Scotland sites. Each one of the sites offers something different, so you can ride through some of Scotland’s most beautiful forests, past stunning lochs, along rocky paths and boulder causeways, and down woodland trails. Entry is free at all the sites.

Mountain biking – what’s it all about?

Even if it’s been a few years since you were on a bike, 7stanes is a perfect place for you to get back in the saddle. You’ll be riding off road, so you don’t have to worry about traffic, and it’s a great way to get some fresh air and see some beautiful places – perfect as Spring arrives and you start to fancy trying something new!

Cycling is a great way to get fit too. A bike round one of the 7stanes beats going to the gym any day, and because you can take it at your own pace, you don’t need to worry if you’ve not exercised in a while.

Mountain biking and more

7stanes is all about mountain biking, but you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the sites.

First off, if you’ve not got a bike, it’s not a problem! There is bike hire at all the sites, so you can get kitted out before heading out on a ride.

There are routes to suit all abilities – from the easiest 'green' routes that are fine for beginners (and that will be relatively flat and wide, and even suitable for bike trailers) to the most challenging 'black' runs (that demand advanced technical ability and good fitness levels), and everything in between.

There are some great forest road rides that are perfect for everyone wanting to get out on their bikes and there are also skills areas where you can practise your skills before heading out on a ride.

For those looking for more, the 7stanes bike parks are for riders aspiring to an elite level of technical ability (including full-on downhill riding to ‘big air’ jumps).

Most of the sites have a mix of easier and more challenging routes, so families or mixed ability groups are able to enjoy mountain biking at their own level.

A day out or a weekend away

As well as offering a range of well-designed and maintained cycle routes, the 7stanes all have on-site facilities so you can spend a full day there. Bike hire and cafés are available at or near to all the sites, and there’s also cycle gear shops, and changing and showering facilities at some of the sites.

7stanes also offers training sessions with skilled riders to help you hone your skills and build your confidence.

The closest of the 7stanes sites is less than three hours drive from Manchester, and all of them are close to local towns where you can find great accommodation and places to eat and drink, so it’s easy to make a weekend of it.
