Gordo's Bits and Bobs - November 5th

Published on November 5th 2004.

Wednesday. Last week.
Greens Restaurant, West Didsbury

This was voted the City Life restaurant of the year. Gordo, who is singularly unimpressed with the very idea of being a vegetarian decided to brave the new middle-middle class enclave of West Didsbury to give it a try. You never know. It was like ‘Escape From New York’ in reverse. Coby Langford would normally be favourite for this type of outing, being vegetarian, but was away beating children up (she is an osteopath, specializing in kids) so Gordo roped in the fragrant but deadly Kate Leach. Ms. Leach can normally be found beating people's wallets up as an Estate Agent in Didsbury. She also specialises in bus driving and screening calls. She tells me Greens has expanded recently, and the owners are very nice blokes and not in fact vegetarians. I am not sure how big the room was before it expanded but it is still tiny. Very bohemian, but not too tree huggy. Very Didsbury, in fact. Tables very close together, Gordo being the gent he is sat with his back to the room so Ms. Leach could view proceedings as the Ladies are wont to do. This turned out to be a mistake. The service was appalling, and Gordo has had a bad back ever since trying to get the attention of the very laid back staff. Maybe they knew Gordo's Mum reads that modern Mein Kampf, The Daily Mail, and decided that Gordo needed punishing for it.
The food was terrific, though. If all vegetarian restaurants were like this I would eat at them more often. I shall do a full review on another occasion as I cannot believe Jonathan Schofield, restaurant critic extraordinaire would encourage the giving of such an award to a gaff with such really awful service.
Thursday
Malmaison

Had a meeting with innkeeper extraordinaire Scott Harpur at The Malmaison. Scott's wife is pregnant. Well Scott, it works! Congratulations. Scott and Gordo are putting on a game dinner late November for the Manchester Confidential stalwarts. Whole roast pheasant, old fashioned with all the trimmings, if you want in email me for details. Gordo made the mistake of having a quick drink in the now very buzzy Mal bar with Julie 'The Squeeze' Calcutt, in charge of special clients across the Mal group. Blimey.
Piccolinos
After a couple, The Squeeze forced me into Piccolinos at six thirty. Met with Claire and Claire from Key 103. Chris Lloyd showed up, as did The Squeeze's boyfriend Steve from the new boutique hotel, Arora. Partied on till late, into Circle which was buzzing for a thursday via Label. Label stock Cohiba Siglos III, Gordos favourite Cuban cigars. Well done guys.
Thursday
The Ferris Wheel.
Manchester's latest PR girl, Louisa Ham, invites Gordo to the opening of the Ferris wheel. A large number of kids there as well. They were being served excellent mini pizzas whilst waiting for the kick off, from Pizza Pizza Express in the Triangle. They looked good. Gordo managed to push his way through the little buggers and grab a few, they were damn good. Too good for the kids. And the ferris wheel? Gordo isn't that daft, he left that other daft little bugger Chris Lloyd to get on that. Gordo went home for an early night. If you want to know about the wheel ask Chris, but not after midnight. And the next woman who tells me she wants to bath him is going to be arrested.
Happy Trails
Gordo
