Spring With The National Trust, National Trust

Spring is finally here... the perfect excuse to escape the city and get out and about at local places and spaces. Whether you're looking for some me time, things to do with friends, the other half, or a day out with the kids, we've got the ultimate guide to getting the most out of spring across the North West.

Freedom in the fresh air

There's acres of space ideal for breath-taking runs, leisurely walks and the chance to spot the spring wildlife while you go.

Blow the cobwebs away in the coastal air at Formby and the new coastal path at Speke Hall. Take in gardens that are bursting into life at Rufford Old Hall and Quarry Bank Mill. Keep an eye out for herds of red deer (beginning to lose their antlers) at Lyme Park and Dunham Massey.

And for all you runners out there, give the new marked running trails a go at  Lyme Park and take part in weekly free 5km timed run.

Top tip! In just under 2 hours, you could also be in the heart of the iconic Lakes - theres' Fell Foot on the shores of Lake Windermere or Aira Force, an impressive 65ft waterfall to explore.

Delve into the past

Rain or shine, there's amazing stories to discover indoors too. Experience 'Downton' - style Edwardian elegance at Lyme Park and as we commemorate the centenary of the First World War, glimpse the last days of aristocatic life at the house on the eve of the conflict. Check out the quirky habits of the Tudors at Little Moreton Hall, and be gobsmacked by the workings of the Mill at Quarry Bank. Discover an amazing part of the World War One story at Dunham Massey as the Stamford Military Hospital. You can also experience traditional May Day celebrations with decorations, dance and music at Little Moreton Hall, Quarry Bank Mill and Speke Hall.

Afternoon Teas

If you fancy relaxing with something delicious, try an afternoon tea in the stables tea-room or restaurant at Speke Hall, a cream or high tea at Mrs Dale's Pantry,Little Moreton Hall, Victorian high tea at Rufford Old Hall and an award-winning afternoon tea at Dunham Massey
