Don't miss the North's biggest Chinese New Year celebrations
30 January - 2 February 2014

2014 is The Year of the Horse, and Manchester will welcome it in with its most spectacular Chinese New Year celebration to date.

This year events will take place all over the city with dazzling displays, activities and performances for all ages.

Everyone is welcome – it's one of the highlights of the city's events calendar, with plenty for you to see, eat, and explore.

Here's what's on:

Chinese Lantern Displays
Saturday 18 January - Sunday 2 February
Over 2,000 bright red Chinese lanterns will deck the city centre from Chinatown to Market Street and beyond. Follow the trail through the city then refuel with sizzling Chinese street food at St Ann's Square.

Chinese Food Market
Thursday 30 January – Saturday 1 February
Try tasty offerings from the best Chinatown eateries, alongside a pop-up bar hosted by Tiger Beer at this lively food market in St Ann's Square. There'll be music and traditional performances to keep you entertained while you eat.

Dragon Parade and Chinatown Celebration
Sunday 2 February, from 1pm
Around 75,000 people watched the famous Dragon Parade in 2013 – this year's will be an equally awesome sight. See the 175ft dragon dancing its way from Albert Square to Chinatown where there'll be street food stalls, martial arts, a funfair, traditional performances, and family arts activities. Try your hand at calligraphy, origami and tangrams, and make sure you stay around for an amazing fireworks display at 6pm. 

Activities at Manchester Art Gallery
Sunday 2 February
Chinese music, themed family activities and more will bring the Year of the Horse into Manchester Art Gallery.

Chinese New Year Celebrations at Manchester235
Monday 3 February
City centre casino Manchester235 will host ping pong, Mah Jong and Punto Banco tournaments throughout January. Then on Monday 3 February, they will stage their Chinese New Year party with a lion dance, luxury prize draws and red envelope giveaways.

American Dreams in China Screening 
Tuesday 4 February
This film screening at Cornerhouse will explore contemporary ideas of 'The Chinese Dream' with a pre-film talk by Dr William Schroeder, lecturer in Chinese Studies at The University of Manchester.

Workshops at The Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art
Tuesday 14 January – Friday 10 February
Take part in workshops and drop-in activities in the run up to Chinese New Year – and check out the horse-themed installation and window display, designed by local illustrator Lydia Meiying with help from local schools, community groups and visitors.

Shops Celebrating Chinese New Year in Manchester

Red Envelope Giveaway from Manchester Arndale
Saturday 1 February
If you're shopping in the city centre on Saturday 1 February, you might be handed one of 2,000 Chinese New Year red envelopes from Manchester Arndale. To see if yours contains one of 500 winning vouchers, just head to the information desk in Manchester Arndale's Wintergarden. Winners get a Manchester Arndale gift card worth £5.

Mandarin Calligrapher at Selfridges
Friday 24 January – Sunday 26 January (afternoons only)
Make a purchase at Selfridges in Exchange Square and a professional Mandarin calligrapher will write you a bespoke message on red paper. You'll find the calligrapher on the Accessories floor. Selfridges has also designed a gift card with Chinese New Year themed artwork, available to buy from 20 January to 6 February.

Beauty Red Envelopes and Chinese New Year Cocktails at Harvey Nichols
If you make a beauty or perfume purchase at Harvey Nichols during Chinese New Year, you'll be given a lucky red envelope containing an exclusive beauty offer. Special offers, a prize draw, and a Chinese New Year cocktail will carry the celebrations throughout the store.

Half price cocktails and beauty gifts at House of Fraser
Celebrate Chinese New Year with a half price cocktail at the Champagne Bar in House of Fraser (midday to 8pm, Monday 27 to Friday 31 January). Downstairs in the Beauty Hall, the Estee Lauder counter will treat customers to fortune cookies and a special gift with purchases, while Kiehls will host themed activities and beauty events throughout Chinese New Year.
