If these bodies are swept away the message willo go out ... will the last person to leave Liverpool turn the light out. This city would decay without the help it gets and has had from the likes of the NWDA. Let's face it if (from next June) the Conservative Government was doling out regional cash would they said any cheques to Liverpool CC. We'd be lucky to get a Giro out of them. Warren please get real, we need them more they need us.

Warren maybe need to look at the city councils level of management first before worrying about other levels of governance. When they allowed the salary of the Chief Executive to rocket to one of the highest in the country presiding over what was labelled the worst council, in order to do something about the salary gap they allowed the creation of about 5 tiers of new management with Assistant Executive directors Divisional managers, Heads of service, Business Unit managers , Neighbourhood managers Development managers, Service Managers etc. The majority of them on between £50 - 150,000 pa with the Chief Exec on £230K plus. But when they start making cuts it will be these people that decide which of the low paid front line staff will go. Justify why any of the Executive Directors or their assistants are paid more than a prime minister? And don't try and say that the Executive Directors posts were cut down to five as the reality is they had to restructure because half of them jumped ship unable to take any more and with the knowledge of what was coming or as one former Executive Director said in his parting comments about the financial mess of the lib dem administration, "before the chickens come home to roost"

Has everyone forgotten that the Audit Commission found Bradley's administration to be the worst-run Council in the country? It is true that these quangoes aren't accountable to the electorate, but that shady back-room deal to keep the Lib-Dems in power after the last election shows that neither is the City Council!

There's a fistful of jobs hanging on these bodies too. I'd not be too keen to sweep them away at this time. But the big difference the NWDA has made to Liverpool's fortunes came, not with the cash, but with the rescue of Culture year. The NWDA sent in its deputy, the wonderful Bernice Law. She sorted out the shambles created by Jason Harborow, and enabled 2008 to pass off without further embarrassment. Nothing she could do about Ringo though
