Who’s afraid of the dark?

Our ghost hunting trip went without a hitch and we all returned safe and sound to tell the tale. Read on to find out what we discovered at Ordsall Hall…

Who’s afraid of the dark?

It was a dark, dark night. The wind was howling outside and the rain was rattling at the window panes of the haunted Tudor mansion Ordsall Hall. (It wasn’t really, I just added that for effect. It was a bit windy though).

Inside the dark, dark house, which has stood on the same spot for 800 years, was a dark dark room. This is because we’d switched the lights off, you see. And in that dark, dark room we found ourselves at 3am, calling out to spirits and attempting to capture some evidence of ghostly happenings. Did we succeed? You’ll have to read on and find out… if you dare. Woo ha haaa.

ManchesterConfidential.com decided to go all Most Haunted for Halloween, and thought that we’d be very brave and attempt to stay up all night in a haunted house. In the search for our friendly local haunted mansion, we stumbled across Ordsall Hall – a beautiful Tudor manor house situated smack bang in the middle of what is now Salford, but which was once moated and surrounded by hundreds of acres of pasture and forest land.

Ordsall Hall has been the location of many a ghostly occurrence, with its resident spirit, the White Lady, thought to be the heartbroken Tudor lady Margaret Radcliffe. We decided to pay old Marge a visit.

Enlisting the help of Stockport based paranormal society Club Zero, and the support of some brave Manchester Confidential.com readers, we arrived at Ordsall Hall at 8.30pm last Saturday night armed with flasks of coffee and enough Red Bull to wake the dead.

Club Zero’s resident psychics, Paul and Jackie, walked around the house, going from room to room and sussing out the spooks to find out which rooms we should focus our investigations on. The rooms in which they felt the strongest presence were in the kitchen, an upstairs bedroom where a woman-hating male spirit by the name of Leftwich resided, and downstairs in the Star Chamber – the oldest part of the house.

Club Zero then hooked up infrared cameras and motion sensors at various points around the house, with monitored ‘trigger objects’ to tempt the spooks out to play.

After a quick briefing from Club Zero’s founder Chris, we split into two groups, switched out the lights and went to opposite ends of the house to begin our investigations.

Throughout the course of the night (until 4am), we conducted séances, tried table tipping, and used EMF and temperature recording equipment to pick up on sudden changes in the atmosphere.

Here are some of the spooky things that happened:

• Motion sensors being set off when nobody was around.

• Trigger objects moving, again when nobody was around to move them.

• Sudden drops and rises in temperature

• Members of the group experiencing funny smells, tastes and nauseous feelings

• Orbs captured on film and camera. Specifically in the Star Chamber, orbs could be seen whizzing around the room in different directions.

• Electrical equipment failing for no reason in an area where the white lady has frequently been spotted.

• Ghostly faces captured on camera

So no spooky noises, no ghostly footsteps, and thankfully no Derek Acorah style ‘possessions’. But still enough to keep us all chomping at the bit to find out whether there really is something out there.
