Wheel to become permanent?

Published on January 17th 2006.

The Wheel of Manchester has proved to be a great success since it appeared in Exchange Square in October, and now it looks as though it could become a permanent fixture in the city’s skyline.

Despite its extravagant £3.5 million price tag, the wheel, which was designed specifically for Manchester, was originally only intended to stay with us until April. But after being so well received it may soon be made into a permanent attraction, as the company behind the wheel are due to meet council planners this month to discuss the wheel’s future.

A similar wheel in Birmingham has already been granted permission to stick around for two more years, so it’s possible that ours might be granted the same privilege. The Wheel of Manchester however, does take up most of Exchange Square and should it stay past its original April finishing date then it would mean sacrificing any summer events that might have otherwise taken place in this prime location.

Would it be worth it though? The 60 foot wheel has definitely proved extremely popular with locals and visitors alike, and business is showing no signs of slowing down. While it may not be as grand as the London Eye, the Wheel of Manchester certainly does add something to Manchester’s appeal, and is a great way to round off a day’s shopping.

Watch this space for more news on the wheel’s fate, but in the mean time, tell us what you think! Should the wheel be made permanent? What do you think of the wheel in general? Submit any comments below!
