What a Place To Be!

Published on January 25th 2006.

What a treat for me to be asked to go and try out one of Man Con’s newest finds – The Place Apartment Hotel. The Griffiths clan live in a small rural village in Yorkshire so you can imagine their joy when they were told they were going to stay in the city – it was reminiscent of Crocodile Dundee visiting New York.

My son Archie packed his suitcase as if he was staying for a month and, after one night there, he’d have been quite happy to do just that.

The Place Apartment Hotel, is unique to Manchester and a real luxury home from home. You enter through the main reception, are greeted by family friendly staff and given our apartment key. It isn’t until you enter the main atrium that you fully appreciate the splendour of the building.

The building was originally a warehouse which was used to store cloth brought by canal from mills across the North West and remained in use as a warehouse until the 1960s. It was left vacant for 30 years before being bought and invested in as The Place Apartment Hotel.

Thanks to this bit of history, the interior is stunning with huge cast iron columns acting as a main feature of the hotel and indeed of the apartments themselves. The owners have a clever way of keeping the main atrium cool, that suggests a feeling of being outside, even though you are undercover when you enter your apartment. It really feels like you are entering a ‘home’ rather than a hotel bedroom.

Once inside our luxury 4 star apartment, we were amazed at the size of it - it was bigger than our whole house put together on one floor! The loft style apartment offered open plan space, of excellent quality. The facilities were incredible, with a relaxing lounge and dining area with the open brickwork adding and a warm and homely feel to the place. We had a fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, freezer and all the luxuries you would expect. Everything you would need in a kitchen is included from a stylish white dinner set if you decided to entertain friends in the dining area down to a cake tin!

They had seemed to think of everything. The kids explored the whole of the apartment yelping: “Look mum, there is even a washing machine and dryer with washing tablets included.” Not that I’d be doing any washing on my day off obviously, but if I was working away from home for a week, I would greatly appreciate this service as well as the iron, ironing board, kettle, nice teas and a hairdryer!

This really is a great stay for business trips, if you want to be able to cook yourself some nice dinner in an evening or curl up on the settee watching Sky Movies, listen to a CD or even read one of the many books that are displayed on the book shelves, this is the place for you, if you’ll excuse the pun.

We stocked up the fridge with the essentials, white wine and lager (not for the kids) – oh, plus nibbles and bacon and eggs for the morning! The kids had a ball and wandered around in slippers and the sumptuous white dressing gowns that were provided for us.

We settled down to a film and eventually retired to our more than comfy contemporary bedroom for the night. I cooked a hearty breakfast the next morning in our kitchen and we all sit round in our jim jams eating. This was also fab, as instead of waking up and having to rush around to make sure you didn’t miss breakfast, you could just take your time.

Check out time isn’t till 11am which I think is perfect as it means you can have a leisurely lie in. The only slight moan of the kids was in the morning I heard from the smallest: “What is that noise?” I said it was the sound of drills of the workmen, as we were in the City and they are the noises you hear in the city. He came back with “bring back the sheep and birds!”

Our lovely friend Faith at The Place Apartments is offering a two bedroom apartment for one night for a lucky reader. The apartment is for four people, so would be great for the family or indeed a couple of couples (subject to availability).
