Uni ups security amid protest fears

STAFF at the University of Manchester are being warned over planned animal rights protests taking place this weekend.

Security is also being stepped up around the universities biomedical facilities, amid fears they may be targeted by protestors.

Some staff have been emailed by the university’s head of compliance and risk, saying around 500 protestors are expected in Manchester for the ‘World Day for Animals in Labs’ protest on Saturday.

The email also says, however, there is ‘significant uncertainty about that number’ following various student protests in the city which have attracted more than expected by police.

A candlelit vigil is being held outside the Stopford Building on Oxford Road tonight (Thursday) and protestors will gather at Whitworth Park at midday on Saturday.

A march will then take place down Oxford Road, past Stopford, ‘which has been identified as a site for protest’ at around 1.45pm. The march will continue to Albert Square and meet for a rally and speeches at 3pm.

Staff in biomedical buildings have been told not to come into work on Thursday evening or Saturday unless totally necessary.

The Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB) has been identified in the protestors’ promotional material and will be closed from 5pm on Friday until Sunday morning.

Staff have also been warned ‘not to get drawn into discussion’ if challenged by protestors. The university will also increase its security presence over the weekend and access to some of the buildings will be limited.
