Trams Away!

North, to the South, to the East to the West – Manchester residents will be jumping for joy today as the government have announced plans to extend the Metrolink to Droylsden, Rochdale and Chorlton.

And it’s about bloody time South Manchester got a look in. Commuters from Chorlton and East Didsbury have suffered long enough on student infested double deckers crawling up and down Oxford Road. And to house hunters, the suburbs will be looking that little bit more appealing now that they will be only a short tram ride away from the centre.

Not to mention our good friends in the North and the East, who will be set to benefit in the long and short term by the expansion, with house prices expected to rocket.

The expansion will be implemented in two phases, with the first phase extending the network to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden in Tameside, and Chorlton in South Manchester.

The second phase will carry the lines through to Oldham and Rochdale town centres as well as to Ashton-under-Lyne, East Didsbury and Manchester Airport.

Leader of Manchester City Council Sir Richard Leese said: "It is crucial that we have rapid, effective public transport, so that our economy becomes even stronger, helping local businesses and families to prosper and thrive.”

Building will commence in 2008, with completion expected in 2010.
