Swingers club upsets the locals in Chorlton

Simon Binns finds latest planning row coming to a head in the southern city Reeperbahn

Swingers club upsets the locals in Chorlton

A planning application to open a private members’ club ‘for couples’ on a Chorlton main road has attracted almost 100 objections.

“We had some complaints when we were opening, but not many. I live near Chorlton and had no idea there were that many other massage places here until the regulars told us.”

But although it has generated protests from local residents, Confidential has discovered that several similar businesses already exist on the same street.

A company called Haybak Ltd submitted plans for the new club, based in the former Furniture Exchange showroom at 318 Barlow Moor Road, last month.

The club would be aimed at ‘a specific interest group’, hold around 300 people and open until 4am. It would include a bar, dance floor, hot tub and showers.

A spokesman for Manchester City Council said the planning application had so far attracted 90 formal objections. But they may be unaware that Barlow Moor Road is already a hotspot for massage parlours and businesses selling sex.

One recent addition is Ruby Milans, which opened on Barlow Moor Road earlier this year. One of its members of staff, who spoke to Confidential but declined to give a name, said business was currently slow.

“Maybe it’s the recession, although launching a new business is always hard,” she said. “I think a swingers club will do well – there aren’t really any in South Manchester.

“It’s not so outrageous and not as sordid as it used to be. Maybe some people will think it’s worth a try. There are worse things in the world.

“We had some complaints when we were opening, but not many. I live near Chorlton and had no idea there were that many other massage places here until the regulars told us.”Alex, a receptionist at nearby massage parlour Vanessa’s Superbabes, also on Barlow Moor Road, said that they had a loyal base of customers and employed more than 30 girls.

“There’s always a call for any type of sex business,” she said. “It’s supply and demand. But it should do well.

“It’s the same as any business – it relies on advertising and they will need to advertise outside of the area as people rarely visit places like that on their own door step.”

Alex, who declined to give her surname, said most for their customers came from Rochdale, Bolton and other parts of Greater Manchester and some from as far as London.

A nearby local trader who declined to be named said of the proposed swingers club, "No problem with it. We have a Keep Chorlton Interesting association which wants to promote independent business and this is as independent as it comes. It keeps Chorlton even more interesting."

Commendable AdamsSeptember 14th 2010.

I'm calling for more public sex in Chorlton. There is no reason for this, I'm just calling for it.

I second this motion. Horizontally second it. More public sex in Chorlton. And Harpurhey where I live.

I thought there were going to be cuts in the public sextor?

I'll get my coat.

I think we should have a Beech Road Public Sex Festival.

VegvertSeptember 14th 2010.

Treece that's a great idea. We could extend it to the Unicorn Grocery. Get some humorously shaped veg out for the lads. Melons, carrots, pomegranates.

M WhitehouseSeptember 14th 2010.

I've seen the locals I really don't want any public sex festivals

goodbye mcrSeptember 14th 2010.

About 100 yards up the road from it there's also a Teso's opening up. So at one place you can pick up some plums and grab some melons and at the other you can... Oh.

goodbye mcrSeptember 14th 2010.

As well as a Teso's there's also a Tescos!! Doh.

You've got to love the fact that local residents are more concerned about the bad influence of Tesco than the brothel and swingers clubs.

It should certainly Keep Chorlton Interesting.

AnonymousSeptember 14th 2010.

I very much doubt anyone would travel all the way from London to visit a sex club in Chorlton. That's just delving into the realms of fantasy .........

AnonymousSeptember 14th 2010.

I very much doubt that too. However, there are plenty of businessmen from the deep, dark South in Manchester on quite a regular basis - surprisingly enough

If people from Bolton & Rochdale come to Chorlton for sex, what do people from Chorlton go to Bolton & Rochdale for?????

EasyquestionSeptember 15th 2010.

They go to Rochdale and Bolton to take the waters in the spas there.

Apparently Chorlton has a history for this kind of extra curricular activity - good luck to them - see

That Cardinal is just a racist fool

AnonymousSeptember 15th 2010.

And have you seen what the bar next door to the venue is going to be.... Hookahs! No joke.

Catholic FoodySeptember 15th 2010.

Judging by the image above the Cardinal is right!

Round the corner (not this one though!)September 17th 2010.

Jokes aside, this article is missing the point - it doesn't matter if there are other massage parlours (or similar) nearby. In fact someone I know who is protesting against this business was very clear to say that they have no issue with swinging or people's sexual preferences.

What people are objecting to is the fact that what is essentially a small night club would be opening very near to homes - some houses back directly onto it. With a 4 AM licence, alcohol sales and a dance floor, there are bound to be issues that you would get with any nightclub when you mix it with a residential area. I'm not aware of any actual dance clubs that are operating in that part of town...?

Christopher BryanSeptember 21st 2010.

If I was going to a swingers club I wouldn't be going for the music, or the dancing for that matter.
