Streets Ahead

Streets Ahead comes to Liverpool for the first time this Bank Holiday, and it's really good. So read on

Streets Ahead

WE'RE probably getting a little too used to all these Bank Holidays. Although always welcome, they don’t half give the old purse strings a battering - not to mention the liver.

“But there’s nothing else to do”, you cry. "Everything comes at a price, right?" Wrong.

This weekend you can prepare yourself for a Bank Holiday of free, yes that’s FREE entertainment on the streets of Liverpool. We're not talking about the cardboard guitar strumming gentleman outside Tesco’s either, rather a spectacle of street theatre, circus, dance and music as the world’s leading street artists congregate in the city centre.

Same old, same old, you might think. However, the Streets Ahead people at Manchester International Arts used to make us envious when they did this sort of thing up the M62. After all, it was Streets Ahead. Well now it's here, just for Capital of Culture year.

By day there will be music coming from all angles, all kinds of exotic and strange dancing in the streets and theatre.

In the evening there’s just as much going on. Firecrackers, masked drummers, giant dragons, water sculptures , aerial escapades… you name it.

The fun starts on Saturday evening where you’re all encouraged to pack a picnic and bag a good spot by St George’s Plateau.

Here, at the opening, there will be drumming from Italy, Catalan street art and Spanish/Argentine theatre which sees 12 aerial acrobats suspended from a sphere above the plateau – with no Ringo or Dave Stewart in sight.

On Sunday and Monday, the entertainment will be just as diverse and compelling as the Saturday. There’s line-dancing, Japanese jugglers and retro fairground boots to mention but a few things.

Who needs the pub now? OK, all of us. Still make sure you check out Streets Ahead this weekend.
