Something for the weekend... (Nov 23-25)

Magic numbers, Ken Campbell, Santa, <br>A Foundation and more. It's all happening here, you know....

Published on November 23rd 2007.

Something for the weekend... (Nov 23-25)

23 today, 23 today...
A few yards away from classy drinking establishments like Slater's and Don 1's, Mello Mello is a world of meta-conceptual madness.

All three floors of the regenerated, Slater Street building will be in use tonight, with a hive of activity on each. On Level 1, there's Liverpool based jazz experimentalists Zukanican, flanked by special guests and dancers.

On the top floor, there's a chill out room of acoustic and electronic performers, while on Level 2 there is a theatre performance and a rant from the legendary Ken Campbell on time travel and the many universes of the multiverse!

And get this: There will be a team of “spiritual scientists” and “psychedelic gurus” on hand to offer insights and revelations throughout the night. 'But why?', you may ask. Well, it's the 23rd of November and, according to many, the number has strong spooky connections.

The blurb invites you to "come along, prove your theories, disprove your certainties, test and be tested, lose your mind to grow it back", so if that sounds like your cup of tea, by all means...

Talking of cups of tea, you can buy it behind the bar (fair trade) as well as being able to take your own stash of booze.

Santa's Grot Ho!
(you're fired! ed)
Forget the city centre department store version of a grotto and get some fresh air down yer. For the next couple of weekends, Santa can be found resplendent in his rather unconventional grotto at Home Farm, Croxteth Country Park. Bring your camera, see the animals and join in the festive fun - just be ready to to answer your child's questions as to why Santa is hanging around with pigs, not reindeer.

Santa's Grotto @ Home Park, Croxteth
Saturday 24th November - Sunday 9th December
£5.50 per child (which includes a present from Santa and farm admission)
Booking line: 0151 233 6905 (booking essential)

Arty networking
Culturepool are a group of people who regularly attend galleries, theatres, music venues and cinemas throughout the city. They invite you to join them, and afterwards get together to and have a nice chat about it. This weekend they are “doing” the A Foundation down at Greenland Street down by the Cains Brewery end of town.

Three former industrial buildings on Greenland Street now house The Coach Shed, The Furnace and The Blade Factory, the area's industrial past and urban present providing a fitting place for the four exhibitions that live there.

The Coach Shed has been transformed into a massive, elevated, kidney shaped pipe, 40ft long, and 6m high, a perfect opportunity for skater dudes as well as art enthusiasts.

And it's not all conceptual art either. There's a series of large scale paintings of fruit and a multi-channel video story about evolution, class, wealth and poverty. In fact, there's 2,5000sqm of arts exhibition space to behold. But Culturepool will explain all that when you get there.

A Foundation and Culturpool
Meeting: Saturday 24th November @ 1pm

Rumour mill
In Southport, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Fleetwood Mac's seminal album, Rumours, tribute act, Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, will play the record in its entirety. The band have already toured worldwide with Mick Fleetwood's golden seal of approval, and have won critical acclaim for their immaculate performances of such hits as Dreams and Go Your Own Way. It was unfortunate that Marks and Spencer tainted the classic 'Albatross' with their adverts. It's now impossible to hear the track without thinking of Lincolnshire red cabbage with apple and cranberries slow braised in red wine and tawny port sauce. Well Fleetwood Mac were no ordinary band...and this promises to be a great showcase of their Magnus opus.

Rumours of Fleetwood Mac @ Southport Theatre
Sunday 25th November
£13.50 - £17.50
