Something Happened in Albert Square This Week

Published on August 19th 2005.

Like ships in the night, another event came and went in Albert Square this week without anyone knowing what it was all about. What this latest one was is anyone’s guess.

Much like the huge oil tanker that appears in the desert in Close Encounters, we tripped over a man made auditorium built overnight by the council’s ooompa loompas. A running track had also appeared out of nowhere.

As with many Albert Square events noone we know had heard what this was all about. The only sign of any explanation was a banner on the Town Hall that announced the arrival of ‘Urban Superstars!’.

Visiting the website for the apparent athletics event, we found that Urban Superstars is actually a quest for Manchester best urban act – rappers and R&B type people.

Although the sight of the next 50 cent battling it out in a 100m sprint with medallions knocking out his opponents in the next lanes would have been a good one, the lack of marketing for these events has left us bemused.

With so many events taking place across all the best squares in town – things like the ace National Allotment event in St Anns Square, the Farmers Market up in Piccadilly and the numerous events that take place in Alberts Square – we’d like to see the council making more of an effort to let us know about them, as at the moment, we rely on people coming back into the office who announcing that they’ve just stumbled across something happening in the square.
