Sankeys: the best club in the world?

It was up against superclubs in Singapore, Greece and Ibiza, but the Mancunian hang-out surrounded by cobbled streets and named after a soap factory has come out on top.The readers of DJ magazine have voted Sankeys as their favourite clubbing destination in the world, in what the magazine claims is the largest worldwide electronic poll of its kind.

The venue has played host to debut performances from the likes of The Chemical Brothers, and Daft Punk, but also live performances from big names such as Bjork and Moby.

Sankeys opened its doors in June 1994 and has undergone many changes in its history. The 1,330 capacity venue located in the Beehive Mill, Jersey Street- a Victorian cotton mill built in 1824.The nightclub’s original name ‘Sankeys Soap’ was inspired by the building’s later use as a soap factory.

The venue has played host to debut performances from the likes of The Chemical Brothers, and Daft Punk, but also live performances from big names such as Bjork and Moby. US DJ will.I.am has confirmed he will play his UK debut solo DJ show at the venue on Sunday 23 May after his performance with Cheryl Cole at the MEN Arena.

Business partners, David Vincent and Andy Spiro have staged huge events at the MEN Arena, London Arena and promoted nights at the Hacienda, Pacha in Ibiza, and The Ministry of Sound in London. Under their management the business has grown and now employs 60 staff and an income of £2.4m in the last financial year.

Sankeys’ cultural significance is recognized in an exhibition at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, which describes it as taking on the dance culture mantle of the Hacienda, Manchester’s legendary clubbing venue.

David said: “We want to thank our fans for voting for us and supporting the club. It means so much to us. We will be adding a few nice touches to improve the club further for everyone in 2010.

“It’s fantastic that Sankeys is number one in the world. While the music scene continues to twist and turn, Sankeys remains special because of its history. “We do have plans to open further venues around the world as we seek to build on the successful template and brand reputation we have established in Manchester.”

In my opinion Sankeys was a much better club before the re-furb. To be fair
I can see why they did it but for me it lost all it's charm. Again, just my tastes
but the music they have on there has lost the plot a bit as well, I think they
play it safe too much. When your running a business you wouldn't want to
take big risks but that's exactly why it's not anywhere near number 1 in my eyes.
Oh, and last time I was there I came across a female manager who was one of
the rudest people I have ever met, not a pleasant character at all...

Splitting in to two clubs to get extra door tax was fairly annoying as well.
Oh great, a new club called Spektrum has opened. Wait a minute, they've
just re-named the upstairs room and put some rubbish lights in....

Wasn't there an article on here ages ago saying Sankey's was terrible?

Last time I went was on a Sunday for Laurent Garnier's live set. They kept us all penned in the bar area right until he came on (over an hour late) and had raised the bar prices; presumably because it was a Sunday so going to be quiet. Quite a disgraceful way to "thank our fans".

I must be one of the few people who likes the club now though. I think the layout is finally right, and there's my faith was restored by the epic Dave Clarke/Technasia night. Not least because parts of Blackout Crew were in the loo, absolutely battered, asking people if they wanted "a donk banging on it?".

Sankey's isn't even the best club in Manchester..
