A Manchester club promoter and DJ launched a Twitter outburst against the city’s best known nightclub boss.
An argument over a cancelled DJ spot on New Year’s Day saw Lewis take to the popular social media forum, where Lewis has more than 1,000 followers of his @murkagedave username.
Dave Lewis, who runs the Murkage club night at South, directed his online rant last week against Sankeys' owner Dave Vincent, branding him an ‘evil little man’ and telling other DJs and promoters to ‘avoid him like the plague.’
An argument over a cancelled DJ spot on New Year’s Day saw Lewis take to the popular social media forum, where Lewis has more than 1,000 followers of his @murkagedave username.
The tweets started with Lewis tweeting: ‘Dave Vincent, owner of Sankeys nightclub, you have taken the piss once again,’ followed by: ‘the man is pure evil, to all the new DJs and promoters on the scene, avoid this guy at all costs.’
The rant, which Lewis also posted on his Facebook page, continued: ‘I am struggling to think of a promoter, DJ or act in Manchester that you have not screwed over.
‘And you wonder why no-one wants to work with you and why no-one goes to your so-called ‘number one club in the world’. Everyone needs to know to avoid him and therefore Sankeys like the plague.’
Lewis also re-tweeted several similar comments about Vincent following his rant and a hash tag started by Lewis against Vincent, also started trending in Manchester at the end of last week.
Lewis’ decision to air his grievances on Twitter comes at an interesting time for the social network. Only last week, reports emerged that singer Courtney Love might be at the centre of a groundbreaking libel case for comments made on the site in March 2009.
Love is being sued by fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir, who claims a string of insulting and allegedly false tweets from Love ruined her reputation and cost her millions in lost revenue. One comment branded her a ‘drug-pushing prostitute’ and a lawsuit has been pencilled in for the end of the month. It will be the first defamation suit brought against a celebrity because of comments made on Twitter.
The decision reached by the courts could have a huge bearing on how Twitter arguments between individuals are handled in the future.
“I would say Twitter was the best platform for it because the re-tweet function is so viral and immediate that your message can spread so rapidly through relevant channels,” Lewis told Confidential.
“I'm not sorry for what I said on Twitter and I feel actually vindicated by the reaction in support of the statements I made.”
Vincent was unavailable for comment when contacted by Confidential.

I've read interviews with DJ's & other promoters world wide who have noted that everyone is sound in dance music apart from DV. THIS RANT HAS BEEN EDITORIALLY TAMPERED WITH TO REMOVE THE NASTY NAME-CALLING.
Please let's not get into name-calling, those rants will be removed. However general comments about clubland, about the wisdom of tweeting greivances, and so on are fine.
In my personal experience, David Vincent could perhaps be a little more humble, a little less "David-centric".
That's the polite way of saying it.
Followed this on Twitter the other day and saw the amount of support Murkage got, It seems Vincent thinks he is bigger than all of the smaller promoters who make the scene what it is. Without these smaller promoters he would not have a scene or indeed a club, Ive slogged it out trying to run nights and heard all the stories about him so nothing surprises me but its good something uses a free and open medium like Twitter to get the conversation started as its clearly made people now speak their minds rather than keep it in as they fear they wont get another gig from him.
Blimey - this saga is almost biblical in its scale. But with records.
What's Dave Vincent done? Cancelled a gig by someone? Why's Murkage so upset, there's more to this is there? If so, what?
"Nite Club Promoter in 'Doing Something A Bit Snide' Shocker"
Thanks Eddy HTFP, my laptop is now covered in tea.
Did Vincent really say 'no comment' or did he just not answer his phone? It was Monday, after all. No 'respectable' nightclub boss is capable of talking before Thursday.
Dave Vincent was out of the country and unavailable for comment, although we have an update on this story coming shortly. So stay tuned.
Having personal experience of dealing with said Vincent in the past I can confirm that I stand firmly in the Lewis corner on this one!
I'm not going to make a personal comment about David Vincent but I think it's fair to say Sankey's Soap has gone down hill alarmingly since he gained full control.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be and neither is Sankeys.
if you like it or not sankeys has done a lot to put manchester nightlife on the map, behind every business like this there is always a colourful character, my view is dave vincent is both passionate in what he does and a good nightclub promoter with a lot of experience, part of his success has come from his personality, similar to leeds back to basics and dave beer, liverpool has cream and james barton and we love space has darren hughes.
BUT yes I agree he does tend to think little of upsetting people....
Has anyone slagging him off here ever worked in the lat night bar or club industry? I have for 15 years in manchester, liverpool, sheffield and london.... there is a lot worse out there, mr vincent is pretty middle of the road when it comes to being difficult.
Vincent is a clubbing Legend ! You cant please everyone all the time. Talking about him and tweeting just makes him even bigger ! : ) Club land is a tough industry and tough decisions get made, maybe DV is an Evil Genious he gets results and has given Manchester a club to be proud of and soon New York !!
This is pathetic!! To do well in business you have to be hard on people sometimes and not take any bullsh*t, as a so called promoter who has struggled in manchester with several failed nights for a while this just looks like a jealous rant from murkage dave towards a businessman who has built a global brand far more successful than his own!! get over yourself murkage you were the ones who wanted to play at his club so badly!!?
I have traveled to a club and played gigs and not got paid at the end of the night..... on one occassion the numbers have been down in the club and the promoter has gone awol at the end of the night not paying me, I have even worked for large multi site operators and struggled to get paid.
Yes Hatongue ! He created you !! Airing your dirty laundry on a social networking site ....Please ! Not my thing. Congrats to David and the Sankeys team on everything they have achieved and are about to achieve. X
This one is going to run and run - just like the legend that is Dave Vincent. I dont think anyone would disagree that DV is a Complete Ledge. I, for one, wish him all the best in New York.
Twitter - where the shy and the cowardly can find their voice. We are living in a time when the diffident who don't have the balls to talk to a person eye-to-eye can shelter behind their postings. This name is a pseudonym by the way.
much ado about ?
Confused as to why ManCon have given this a story. Dave Vincent has always been fine in any dealings I've had with him. Eccentric, different and ambitious YES. Evil? Really? If he was half as bad as this grudge holder suggests then no doubt his legal reps would be all over this. ManCon, you're better than being a platform for personal vendettas - which this clearly is.
Don't think there would be much chance of a Libel Case Holding much water.....
I think a defamation case would be pretty easy to prove actually. Especially considering the guy is attempting to draw more publicity to his comment and claims.
Oh, the irony. Murkage are notorious for cancelling acts and DJ's at the last minute. This is like the pot calling the kettle black.
I once heard about a guy who ran a "famous" club that gained an accolade that no one could quite believe.
It was alledged that his diet involved copious amounts of special K.
I saw it drying on his radiators too, so not all hearsay....
Why would you keep breakfast cereals on a radiator? I keep mine in the cupboard.
EDITORIAL COMMENT - steady on there ranters...some of you are getting too close to a libel case yourselves. Any similar comments will be removed.
yes man con ran a previous story about another vendetta recently that was not very interesting to anybody else in Manchester apart from where it was..it caused people to comment and slander about both involved.
wow Kelloggs are involved now and the ranters appear to to calling their lawyers. Will it play at the Comedy Store?
a boo hoo
my giiiiig got cancelled
mummy...
where is the follow up to this story that was previously promised?
Sankey's offered a statement in response, it never arrived.
Pram. Out. The. Toys. Of. Thrown.
Sankey's used to be a good club, now it's garbage. Full of wannabees and poseurs. Stopped being about the music years ago. Avoid it like the plague.
