Salford Reds stadium plans expected this month

Peel prepares plans for new £28m facility

Salford Reds stadium plans expected this month

A planning application for the new Salford Reds rugby stadium will be submitted on August 26.

The 15,000-seater arena – reduced from its original capacity of 20,000 - should be ready for the 2012 Super League season

The joint venture is being led by Salford City Council and development Trafford-based developer Peel Group. Confidential revealed earlier this week that Salford Council will loan the developer – which has assets worth £4.5bn - £22m to fund the project, as well as having already handed over land in Barton worth £6.7m.

Peel and the council said the stadium, which will have two outdoor sports pitches, offices, player facilities and hospitality boxes, will be for the local community, not just for the rugby club.

John Merry, Leader of Salford City Council, said: "The new stadium is an important asset for the city, economically and culturally.

"It is a new home for the Reds at the start of another Super League season and will provide many state-of-the-art facilities for the community.

"I'm pleased that work has started to prepare the land for the new stadium and this is the next step toward making this scheme a reality for the people of Salford."

Work is expected to start on site in November.
