Roads closed for Labour Party conference

Car and bus journeys to be affected next week

Roads closed for Labour Party conference

Routes in an out of Manchester city centre are set to be affected this weekend and most of next week as the Labour Party conference gets underway.

The conference starts tomorrow until Thursday, and a number of roads have been closed around the ‘secure zone’ near Manchester Central and the Midland and Radisson hotels.

Manchester City Council said some buses would also be re-routed during the conference.

The city council said in a statement: “The success of the 2006 and 2008 Labour annual conferences meant that the organisers had no hesitation in returning to our city for a third time. Furthermore, they have stated that its 2012 and 2014 annual conferences will be held in Manchester .

“More than 11,000 delegates and 2,000 media representatives will attend Europe's largest political conference and many will participate in the hundreds of fringe events being held within the convention complex and surrounding venues.

“This conference is expected to generate more than £15.5m of economic benefit for the region and increase the city's international perception as a quality conference destination.

“Manchester's city centre will be extra busy during the five days of conference and roads close to Manchester Central and its surrounding hotels and restaurants will be affected.

“Traffic and pedestrians will be diverted away from some streets and some buses will be rerouted."

Time to sell up and leave to ehhh Botswana? When it comes to standards of living, why oh why does nobody ever look at Scandinavia? Hardly hardcore capitalist as one would think. Wealth distribution at its best...and no problems with investors.

Whalley Ranger I'm off to Iceland tomorrow. It has 300k people. Sweden has almost 9m, Norway has less than 5m. The UK has more than 60m people. I've been to all the Scandi countries and love them but their capital cities in their metropolitan areas are never more than half the size of Greater Manchester. Their other major cities are more likely to be the size of Sunderland. They were late to industrialisation - incredibly backward before then - and they simply have nothing comparable to our urban areas. I love it when people use Scandinavia as an analogy for Britain because really there is no more useless analogy under the sun. We are nothing like those countries in demographic or tradition. We perhaps should look to solve our own problems or if we must compare and contrast then we should do that with Germany. Incidentially I took a party of twenty German housing association bosses around last Tuesday who were looking to see how we ran our housing associations. They were learning from us.
