Regatta boosts turnover and profits

Clothing firm takes advantage of ‘staycation’ trend

Published on October 25th 2010.

Regatta boosts turnover and profits

Outdoor clothing manufacturer Regatta Ltd grew revenues for 2010 by nearly 10 per cent despite the recession.

The Trafford Park firm posted a turnover of £80m, up 9.5 per cent on the previous year’s figure of £73m. It almost doubled pre-tax profits for the year to January 31, 2010, which stood at £7.1m (2009: £4.2m).

The firm said it restructured the management of its Dar2b brand to target a younger market and was seeing sales growth in the UK and Europe, although both that and its traditional Regatta-branded lines were costing more to produce.

Regatta keeps costs down by outsourcing its manufacturing requirements. It held £22m of stock and had net assets of £20m.

In the notes to the accounts prepared by the firm’s directors, it said: “The board is very pleased with 9.5 per cent growth in a difficult economic climate.

“Both brands have had a very good start to 2010 and will show good growth although currency fluctuations and product cost increases are difficult to pass on to customers in the current economic climate and are consequently constraining margin.

“We are well-placed to take advantage of the growth of consumer interest in the great outdoors and the increased demand for holidaying at home.”

The firm, led by boss Keith Black, employs 331 people and has a wage bill of £1.6m (2009: £1.3m). The highest paid director took home an increased salary of £399,000.
