Nixor IT Recuitment Interview

We disrupt Rambo's rammed schedule to chat about new team member Matt

Nixor IT Recuitment Interview

HAVING recently recruited Matt, head of coding, through Nixor recruitment, we caught up with our commercial director Helen Ramsbottom to discuss her thoughts on the recruitment process. Finding a couple of minutes with Helen was difficult, given her hectic schedule of high-powered business meetings, trips to Carluccio's and sneaking in cheeky Vimtos with Gordo. So any time saved is a blessing – something Nixor aim to deliver.

I'll try to make this quick. How long has Matt been here and how is he fitting in?
Matt's been here for a few months now and he's fitting in really well. He's a good addition to the team. His official title is head of coding, so he's heading all the projects for Confidential. The role includes rolling out the current magazine formats, heading the development of the new formats and building separate websites for third parties.

Did Nixor give extra support once Matt was hired?
Yes, Nixor have kept in touch along the way, just to check whether everything is going OK and to see if we needed anything else from them.

The service Nixor offer sounds very personal. Did they spend a lot of time assessing Manchester Confidential's specific needs?
James (one of Nixor's consultants) was very keen to come into the office right from the word 'go'. It wasn't a case of ringing them and saying 'we've got this brief' and it just being an administrative thing for them. He came in, met us – he's met us face-to-face on quite a few occasions – to get a real sense of the business, the people and the environment. He likes to get to know us as people as well as as a business, which I think helps when he's trying to match up candidates for us.

Most of the recruitment at Confidential is done 'in house'. Why did you choose to go through Nixor for this particular role?
Previously with most of our recruitment we have simply sent out message within our readership, but that has usually been for roles within sales or marketing, as we have quite a lot of people with those skills within our demographic. However with the technical side of things we've never really tapped into the high-level skill that we've needed when we've put things out on our own website. This is why we decided to work with Nixor – for them to head-hunt people for us.

It sounded like it was quite a speedy recruitment process. How much time and effort did it save you?
Oh loads. Absolutely loads. If you advertise something yourself you can spend hours alone sifting through unsuitable applications. Literally, working with Nixor was a gift for us. We only saw quality candidates, so it kept the time spent in the recruitment process to a minimum.

So what sort of value would you place on Nixor's assistance in the recruitment process?
Obviously, it costs us nothing to advertise on our own site in terms of value, but in terms of time... the time that you spend looking at recruitment is a loss of valuable time, more than anything. Any time I'm spending looking at CVs, I'm not looking at the commercial side of the business. So when you think of it in those terms it's much more worthwhile to pay a specialist for their service.

Finally, will you be using Nixor in the future for further recruitment of IT roles?
Yes, I'd definitely recommend Nixor. They're a young up-start company, they're passionate about recruitment and they run the business themselves, so you're guaranteed to get the best service as it's directly in their interests. They really know what they're doing. They've got a lot of experience in this area. We've actually worked with them on three different roles. One of those was a sales director and even though the role was slightly off their core base of candidates, they still found us quality people – they're really switched on about what they're doing.
