New Deputy Chief Constable: Ian Hopkins

Greater Manchester Police have announced the appointment of Ian Hopkins as Deputy Chief Constable. Hopkins has been GMP’s temporary Deputy Chief Constable since December 2011 and will retain overall responsibility for Force performance, the Force Change Programme and Corporate Communications.

Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy said, "I am delighted that Ian Hopkins has now been appointed permanently as the Deputy Chief Constable. He was appointed on a temporary basis by the Police Authority 12 months ago and has provided strong leadership to the force through a difficult period of budget cuts, change and serious incidents ensuring that performance has nevertheless improved. He has wide operational experience and a record of driving innovation and better service to the public. He is well suited to meet the challenges of the next few years."

Speaking about his appointment DCC Hopkins said, “I have been extremely proud to be the Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police since 2011.  The past year was a very challenging one for the Force and I’m pleased to have been able to contribute, helping to  keep the people of Greater Manchester safe.

“The challenge ahead is considerable but I am totally committed to helping officers and staff to continue to deliver an improved performance for the people that we serve.”

As an Assistant Chief Constable in GMP, Hopkins has had responsibility for Specialist Operations, Call Handling and Response Policing and territorial Divisions including Salford, Wigan and Trafford.
