Music to the ears

So, you want to be a star? Singing on the karaoke machine at your local pub not really fulfilling your musical ambitions? If you reckon you can hold a tune and are itching to get on stage, get yourself down to the Royal Northern College of Music this weekend (swinging around every lamp post that you pass) for your chance to compete in the BBC Radio Two Voice of Musical Theatre competition.

Pop Idol this isn't - the acclaimed BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre is a highly respected event for professional performers that celebrates the best of musical theatre and is broadcast nationwide.

For the first time ever though, you, me and the bloke next door are being offered the chance to be a part of it, and showcase our talents to top musical professionals. I’d like to make it very clear that I shall not be showcasing my talents, but the point is that I could if I wanted to.

Non-professional singers and performers are being invited to The Royal Northern College of Music this Saturday 12th August to show the judges what they have to offer, and then fifteen lucky people will be selected to receive three days of intensive quality voice and performance coaching.

From these fifteen, up to five will be put forward to take part in the preliminary round of the BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre alongside professional performers from around the world.

You can reserve yourself an audition place on Saturday by visiting www.bbc.co.uk/newtalent. If you don’t manage to get yourself an audition this way then there will be an open call audition on Sunday 13th August, but hopefuls need to arrive before 8.30am to be in with a chance of being seen. The early bird catches the worm, and all that.

BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre auditions for non professionals on Saturday 12th August. For more information visit www.bbc.co.uk/newtalent or call 08700 10 60 60

So practise your jazz hands and warm up your voicebox, and get yourself down to the RNCM this weekend. Of course, there’s always Krazy Kev’s Karaoke if you don’t make it…
