Mr Red goes on patrol

Curious looking gent to warn about the dangers of drinking late and then driving early

Published on December 6th 2007.

Mr Red goes on patrol

Following a 19 percent increase in drink drive related arrests last Christmas, Mr Red - Greater Manchester’s newest icon, is launching its Red Faced drink driving campaign.

With Christmas just around the corner, the people of Greater Manchester are gearing up to embrace the madness that is the Christmas party season. Everything is ramped up to excess capacity: too many mince pies are eaten, too many office kisses are planted and too much alcohol to even dare think about is consumed.

In anticipation for the festive frolics - Mr Red – the face of Greater Manchester’s only multi-operator/multi-mode public travelcard provider, System One Travelcards, is launching its Red Faced drink driving campaign to remind commuters, that driving to work the ‘day after the night before', is just as dangerous as driving home over the limit after a Christmas party.

As if we didn’t need to prove the point a Manchester Confidential survey showed that 44% of readers who responded said no they don’t drink the morning after the night before but 56% said yes they do.

Brake, the road safety charity, reports that 17 percent of all drink drive prosecutions happen following a morning breath test and the NHS claims it can take up to 15 hours for alcohol to leave the system after drinking four pints of beer or four large glasses of wine.

Last year Greater Manchester Police issued more breath tests than ever before with 12,581 drivers breathalysed compared to 7,132 the previous year. More arrests also took place, with 434 drivers being arrested for being over the limit.

You may have spotted Mr Red this week. He has appeared at the following locations:
Monday - Princess Parkway in the central reservation opposite Asda
Tuesday – Trinity Way – opposite Renault Garage
Wednesday - Great Ancoats central reservation opposite Toys R Us
Thursday – Rochdale Road near Skyline apartments
Friday - Princess Parkway in the central reservation opposite Asda

Mr Red has very obviously reminded commuters that taking a bus, train or tram this Christmas is a much safer option when alcohol has been drunk the previous night. Don't be left red faced in the morning by taking an unnecessary risk.
