Mothers' Day!

Published on March 16th 2006.

Mothers' Day, or Mothering Sunday to be precise, is upon us, and in case you don't already have something organised, we're here to help you out with some great restaurant ideas to really treat your mum this Sunday.

I don't know about you but Mothers' Day in our house normally involves my poor mum being stuck in the kitchen cooking a Sunday roast for us all while we put our feet up in front of the telly. This year however we'll be dragging her kicking and screaming away from her Aga to try one of the fantastic Mothers' Day menus on offer around town.

A bit of trivia for you - Mothering Sunday has nothing to do with 'Mother's Day', which is the American version of the festival. Mothering Sunday, the fourth day of Lent, was traditionally a day when children who worked as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mothers, but the historical origins of Mothering Sunday are not widely known. So I'll tell you!

Churchgoers in England go to their local parish church on a Sunday - this Church is called their 'daughter church'. Hundreds of years ago it was considered very important for people to return to their home parish or 'mother church' once a year, which normally happened in the middle of lent.

The annual return to the 'mother church' inevitably included a family reunion when the children of the family returned to their family home for the day, picking wild flowers along the way to give to their mothers as a gift.

Mothering Sunday also became known as Refreshment Sunday, as the fasting rules of Lent were relaxed for the day, the food specially associated with the day being the Simnel Cake, which is a fruit cake with layers of almond paste.

I don't know about Simnel cake, but there's certainly plenty of food related activity going on around Manchester with special Mothers' Day menus being served in all of the best restaurants in town. Check out the great Mothers' Day menus at the following venues:

Room
Tom's Chop House
Malmaison
The Didsbury Village
Harvey Nichols
The River Room
Obsidian

With so many great deals, you have absolutely no excuse for not making your mum feel like a Queen this Sunday!
