More Manchester jobs to go as government scraps regional office

The government has announced plans to scrap its nine regional offices, meaning the loss of upto 200 jobs across Manchester and Liverpool.

Eric Pickles, communities secretary, said they had become a distraction in the local decision making process and were simply “agents of Whitehall to intervene and interfere.”

The string of regional outposts was created by the Conservative government in 1994 but Pickles said they were largely redundant in modern society where much of its work could be done online. The offices act for 13 departments and have 1,700 staff. It has a Manchester office in City Tower in Piccadilly Gardens.

John Denham, shadow communities secretary, said: “The decision leaves English regions without any way of co-ordinating economic development, major infrastructure projects and the effective co-ordination of public services for local people.”

A spokesman from the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) said in response: "That is a disgraceful way for Pickles to describe his staff, who are dedicated public servants committed to doing the best for their communities. He should apologise."
