Manchester gets turned on!

Manchester’s Christmas lights get turned on this week in a glittering show with Simon Webbe, the cast of Mamma Mia and lots of fireworks.

Manchester gets turned on!

Oh yes. It’s cold, it’s dark, but we don’t mind because it’s nearly Christmas! Well, kind of. We’re reaching that time of year now when everyone begins to take on a Christmassy glow, the streets take on a slightly more magical atmosphere and the shop windows are filled with sparkly Christmas party outfits.

Of course, in two month’s time we’ll all be skint, sick of the sight of Santa and finding bits of tinsel and rogue Cadburys Roses in the most inconvenient places. But for now, we can indulge and enjoy.

The festive markets, arguably the best thing about Christmas in Manchester, will be making their return in a couple of weeks, but before then we have the Christmas lights switch on show this week to fill us with festive cheer.

On Thursday 9th November in Albert Square there will be an exciting live show, culminating in the switching on of our Christmas lights and a firework display.

The warm up show starts at 5.30pm, with the main act Simon Webbe taking to the stage to show off some of his post-Blue magic at 6.15pm.

The fireworks finale, accompanied by songs from the cast of Mamma Mia! Will take place at 7pm, when the National Grid will splutter and splurge for a moment and Manchester will become lit up like a, er, Christmas Tree.

Want to know what good old Pat Carney has to say? Of course you do. I’ll let him have the final word then.

"The Christmas Lights Switch-on Show is a perennial favourite in Manchester's calendar of events. People come from all over the city to enjoy the event that marks the start of our festive season. We have a great line up this year and Manchester's lights are among the best in the UK. After the Switch-on show the city will be bathed in a sea of light, as we make way for the return of Manchester's Christmas Markets on 16 November."

Thanks Pat.
