Manchester Welcomes New Lord Mayor

HAVING first been elected in 2006 to represent the Cheetham ward, Councillor Naeem ul Hassan will begin his new role as Lord Mayor of Manchester on Wednesday 15 May.

"I’ve been lucky enough to work with the residents of Cheetham for the last seven years and I am extremely honoured to now serve all of Manchester as Lord Mayor."

Clr Hassan was born in Lahore, Pakistan but moved to Manchester in 1984. The new Lord Mayor brings to the office a diverse range of employment experience having worked in the city as a factory worker, taxi driver, in security and hospitality management. Hassan has also been particularly active within the GMB Union and served as both a race and community liaison officer for the Lancashire region.

Having completed a BTEC in Engineering at the Manchester College for Arts and Technology, Hassan eventually trained as a magistrate on the Manchester Bench with a move over in to politics inevitable.

Since being elected to Manchester City Council, Clr Hassan has served on a large variety of committees and been involved in numerous community groups, including Muslims for Labour and the Asian Community Development Trust.

Lord Mayor Naeem ul Hassan JP said, "I’ve been lucky enough to work with the residents of Cheetham for the last seven years and I am extremely honoured to now serve all of Manchester as Lord Mayor."

"As Lord Mayor I’m looking forward to not only meeting the people who make up our culturally diverse cosmopolitan city but also visitors from right across the globe."
