Manchester Masters Graduate Scheme

Recent graduate? This could kick-start your career and get you a free Masters degree

Published on July 21st 2011.

Manchester Masters Graduate Scheme

IF you graduated this year or last, consider this for your next big step. The Manchester Masters graduate scheme gives you some of the best work placements around and the chance to get a fee-free Masters degree. The programme has recently opened for entries, so now’s the time to apply for a place.

The year-long programme, which starts this autumn, takes the form of four marketing placements in a variety of PR, advertising, marketing, digital and other creative roles in leading Manchester businesses.

MediaCityUK, MediaCom North, The Co-operative and digital media pioneers Manchester Confidential are amongst those who have given placements to Manchester Masters participants in the past.

Manchester Masters 2010You also work towards a Masters degree from Manchester Metropolitan University – fee-free. And you get personal mentoring from a well-respected creative industry professional.

When you finish, you'll have gained invaluable industry experience, a free Masters degree, a whole load of useful contacts, and a very impressive CV, making you a very attractive package for prospective employers. In fact, former Manchester Masters have gone on to secure permanent marketing roles at their placement companies or positions in top global businesses as a result of the programme.

The programme is open to applicants from any degree course – both 2010 and 2011 undergraduate and postgraduates – from any UK university. It follows that competition is high – but don't let that put you off applying. According to Sam Jones, a Manchester Masters participant who now works at Manchester Confidential, it's not The Apprentice-inspired, super-strivers who get the places.

Said Sam, “In the first stage of the application, you have to put a video on YouTube of yourself. It's 30 seconds to a minute where you have to sell yourself, so I pretended to be a prostitute.

“The people who just talked straight to the camera didn't tend to get through that round. And then there's a two-day assessment centre where they send you off on little missions and adventures, and they slowly narrow it down to the final ten.

“You get the people who think they're on The Apprentice – there was about 30 of them there – and they were the first to go. It seemed like it was about being yourself and not being a marketing stereotype.”

For candidates who make the final 50 shortlist, but not the final ten, Manchester Masters will hold a ‘matchmaking’ session where students will have the chance to get in front of top employers in the North West.

No matter what degree you've done or what type of person you are, if you want a marketing career in Manchester, it's well worth putting yourself forward.

The deadline for applications is Monday 5 September 2011. The assessment centre will be held on 12 and 13 September 2011. The programme will start in October 2011.
