MANCHESTER Airport is flying high after being crowned UK Airport of the Year at the annual Airport Operators Association (AOA) awards.
“As well as adding more routes we also continue to develop and invest in the airport, including rapidly progressing our £800m Airport City project and connecting the airport to the region’s tramway."
Winning in the passengers over six million category, the UK’s third largest airport was up against airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham, and received the accolade due to a phenomenal year of growth, increased destination choice and infrastructure investment.
Voted for by the British Air Transport Association airlines, the annual awards were held at the London Metropole and Tricia Williams, Customer Services Director, collected the award on behalf of Manchester Airport.
Andrew Cowan, Chief Operating Officer for Manchester Airports Group (MAG) said: “We are absolutely delighted to beat off fierce competition. It has been an incredibly successful year at Manchester Airport and we hope to soon see passenger numbers back over 22 million – a symbolic figure we’ve not seen since 2007.
“Over the last 12 months we have significantly grown, not just from a passenger point of view but from a destination perspective. This year we confirmed a direct route to Hong Kong, with Cathay Pacific, which will make Manchester the only airport outside of London with a direct non-stop service to China.
“As well as adding more routes we also continue to develop and invest in the airport, including rapidly progressing our £800m Airport City project and connecting the airport to the region’s tramway, a feat we achieved with Metrolink over a year ahead of schedule. It is for reasons like these, I believe, made us a worthy winner in the awards.”
As well as connecting the North West to China, Manchester Airport has also confirmed routes to Miami, Jeddah, Toronto, Vienna and Pisa this year. As well as strengthening services to North America with increased capacity and frequency on routes to New York and Atlanta.

It seems like we have people with ambition in charge at the airport. Fighting to get new destinations and new services, which is great. I don't see why all the long haul flights have to be from London. Hundreds of thousands of people have to go down there to get to certain destinations, and that's money and jobs that should be for Manchester. So long may it continue to get more destinations and more passengers, but the amount people I hear complain about waiting ages for luggage or getting stuck in passport control is unbelievable, and the machines in the car park are always out of order. It's little things like that that could improve the airport massively for the people who use it.
I live under the flight path so I'd rather Heathrow gets more business.
To Anon complaing about living under the flightpath, The airport was there before you. Deal with it.

Plenty of cheap places to live in Manchester that are not under the flight path.

I agree with EVERYTHING that Darren has said here! But the devil is in the detail, and queueing for hours to get through passport control, automated E-Passport gates which are even slower, and slow wifi access for passengers waiting for their flights do not truly make for an "Airport of the Year" by my definition!
And there is absolutely diddly squat in T3. That terminal needs some investment.
Manchester Airport needs a cataclysmic refurb. Apart from bits of T1, it's all very outdated. Good we are getting more routes but it's a pity that hanging around at the airport is not much fun.
Bet they did not show them T3....what a poor excuse of a terminal, both inside and out.... It is a disgrace to walk from T1, down with the lift, through the tunnels (bit of a poor effort when it is raining).
T2was a fast pleasant base for longer haul flights.T3 really is very poor.so many perplexed faces as arrivals find their connections along an outdoor path in bad weather.Which cuckoo had the internal access to T1 boarded up?
George Osborne should next have a radical rethink and formulate a devolved strategy for the origin of flight departures by the country's national carriers. T5 at Heathrow is already too small (hence the promotion of T2), connecting flights from regional airports to holiday destinations from Gatwick, are next to non-existent, and London airports (and their road infrastructure) generally, are close to capacity. Why should the rest of the country have to travel to Gatwick to go on holiday with BA and Virgin? Let the south travel north to the regions. More flights, more investment, more growth -and environmental benefits for London.
Always thought that a truly fast railway system should be joining london,manchester,leeds/Newcastle airports together as well as 3 or 4 other stopping points to provide extra options on capacity and weather/maintainence issues
Did they actually visit Manchester airport? In the years of travelling; I've been struck how airports in most European countries, and even the local Liverpool John Moores is relatively efficient. Manchester always seems a bit grubby in comparison.

Surely that's Liverpool John Lennon? Flights from the University are few and far between in my experience. Manchester Airport seems to be in a state of perpetual refurb - not a pleasant place to hang around.
