AHEAD of its official opening by the Queen, The Co-operative Group’s new head office in Manchester has been declared the most environmentally-friendly building in the world.
They have created a highly sustainable, extremely low carbon space. An excellent working environment with deep green credentials.
The accolade comes on the day (14 November) The Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, tour One Angel Square and unveil a plaque to mark the formal opening of the 14 storey building in the city centre.
The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM), an internationally acclaimed system of assessing buildings, gave One Angel Square a score of 95.16% - the highest ever awarded.
The award comes as a result of the building’s many environmentally friendly features, which include power generated from crops grown on the Group’s farms; heating and cooling the premises by drawing air below the basement and redistributing it at the earth’s core temperature; and a double skin façade that acts as a ‘duvet’ to insulate the offices in the winter and ventilate it in the summer.
One Angel Square is phase one of NOMA, a major scheme to redevelop 20 acres of the northern part of Manchester city centre. The 10 year programme will create a mixed use district, incorporating office space, residential, and leisure facilities.
Gavin Dunn, Director of BREEAM, BRE Global, said: “This achievement of the highest score ever under BREEAM reflects an ambitious vision and commitment from The Co-operative Group and their project team. They have created a highly sustainable, extremely low carbon space. An excellent working environment with deep green credentials.”

Moving on from the Gay Pride topic, here's a real Queen; www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/…/royal-visit-live-queen-prince-6303005…
Oh look, the same picture twice
A stunning building indeed. Congratulations COOP and co. What does surprise me is that no one's picked up on the NOMA brand name. Noma is a hideous disease.
Still work to be done. Noise bund to be installed to reduce some of the traffic noise created by the new road, and, importantly, the money promised to Angel meadow & St Michaels flags is still to be paid. Nice building though, reminds me of a ship
Not sure a swanky new headquarters is quite what the Co-op needs in the aftermath of the Co-op bank fiasco. But not to worry, I'm sure those sky high prices at Co-op shops will soon pay for the building, helped by the minimum wages of most of their staff.
Area around it still a mess....
A few months ago the comments section here would no doubt feature lots Labour supporters,or Kevin Peel from the council. All happy to contrast the ethics of the Co-op with the nasty private banks in the city.Of course when the management of the Co-op turns out to be just the same, they are conspicuous by their absence. The biggest irony is that the Peoples History Museum currently has an exhibition on the Co-op,wiich is worth seeing to contrast with what it became because of greed and over ambition of bad management.
That's the thing, greed and human nature will always come out in the wash www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/…/founder-manchester-confidential--mark-6280139…
