Liverpool One to Number One

The big shiny new retail zone wants buskers and street musicians to audition for places in their elegant malls and marbled halls

Published on August 18th 2009.

Liverpool One to Number One

The return of the busker... “hurrah, the merry music of the street troubadour”. Or even... “oh no, not more bloody racket from the enthusiastically tone deaf?”Anyway, the private space of Liverpool One has gone a bit mushy and decided to get all public with its own Merseybeat.

In pursuit of the new La’s Liverpool One will be offering auditions for all music styles from classical and jazz to pop and indie.

Thus the new ‘prime retail core’ is, to quote, ‘looking to celebrate street buskers everywhere with a fantastic opportunity to entertain their city – and who knows maybe get that lucky break.’

In pursuit of the new La’s, Liverpool One will be offering auditions for all music styles from classical and jazz to pop and indie.

The auditions take place in Peter’s Lane on Thursday 20 August from 4pm for classical, jazz and ambient musicians. This will be followed by a second open audition for all musicians on Thursday 27 August from 4pm.

The judging panel will comprise store managers from Liverpool One’s brands with Dave Lincoln from Smooth FM. Those chosen will be given regular busking slots in popular areas of the complex.

A main bod of Liverpool One, Chris Bliss, estate director, says: “Liverpool is a city filled with talent and we’re looking to harness the musical skills of the city whilst welcoming visitors with music to suit their mood – classical sounds for the Peter’s Lane, right through to acoustic indie bands for Paradise St. We’re looking to enhance the visitor experience.”

At Confidential we think it appropriate that Bliss sounds happy, although we’re trying to work out what ‘ambient musicians’ are?

Anyway, if you’re handy with a ukulele or a harp, even a kazoo or a didgeree-do then contact the Liverpool One information Centre on 0151 232 3128, email info@liverpool-one.com or call into the info centre to collect an application form. Just remember no power or amplification will be provided.

Discerning ShopperAugust 18th 2009.

It will all end horribly. Irritating buskers would be just another reason not to venture onto the canyon-like, forbidding passages of Liverpool One! The ‘Met Quarter’ started mucking about with the shopping environment with pretend 'parties' and making shoppers queue and surrender e-mail addresses just to get into the place to look at the shops! This sort of heavy-handed P.R. bollocks puts people off going into what is just a shopping precinct. I haven’t been back and neither probably have the other people insulted and outraged who also turned on their heels. Liverpool One should bear this in mind if its bosses decide to force-feed artificial jollity to shoppers.

Toxteth TerrorAugust 18th 2009.

I reckon a bunch of retail store managers and for that matter anyone from Smooth FM are the last people who should be juding a talent contest.
