Jesus gets a £100,000 advertising boost

Religious organisations have long bemoaned the commercialisation of Christmas, but this year, the church is hoping to redress the balance.

The nativity used to be known as the most famous story of all time, but nowadays just 12 per cent of adults know the Christmas story in any detail.

Churches of all denominations have joined together to launch their biggest ever advertising campaign to spread the story of the nativity. The national campaign, which will include radio commercials, bus stop posters, and full page ads in the Big Issue, will centre on the slogan 'Christmas starts with Christ'. It is expected to reach some 20 million people across the country.

The nativity used to be known as the most famous story of all time, but nowadays just 12 per cent of all adults, and seven per cent of 18-24-year-olds know the Christmas story in any detail.

In Greater Manchester, 38 bus stops will display the poster. In Manchester, they can be seen on Cheetham Hill Road, on Broadway in New Moston, on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton, on Moston Lane, and in the city centre at Piccadilly/Ducie Street. You can also see them in Christmas editions of the Big Issue.

Mike Elms, former CEO of advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, and trustee of ChurchAds.Net (the organisation co-ordinating the campaign), said: "For years churches across the UK have produced posters to promote Christmas, but, until now, no one has attempted to run a fully national campaign, with a long-lasting slogan that runs and builds year on year.

“We’re learning that, by embracing modern communications tools, we have the capability to communicate the Gospel message powerfully to the entire country.”

HA! except that Christmas was nicked from a Roman celebration of gluttony called Satanaya. No good Jewish boy would be tending animals in a field in December, think about it.
