Jabez Clegg turns to flats

Manchester student institution to get a facelift and new café bar

Published on July 21st 2010.

Jabez Clegg turns to flats

Manchester-based Hale Leisure is to refurbish its Jabez Clegg bar and nightclub on Oxford Road, and build new student flats next door.

“It’s been going 20 years and it’s the right time to give it a facelift,” he said, “The bar and club is performing well but only during term times, so that’s why we decided to branch out into the accommodation.

The firm has submitted plans for an extension to the building to include 68 student apartments and a new café bar.

Aiden Clancy, director of Hale Leisure, said the top floor of Jabez Clegg would also be used for the new flats but the rest of the bar would remain intact.

“It’s been going 20 years and it’s the right time to give it a facelift,” he said, “The bar and club is performing well but only during term times, so that’s why we decided to branch out into the accommodation.

“It’s a good location for student flats and we’ve been working on these plans for the last two years.”

Clancy said there no timescale or cost had been attached to the project, as the firm was currently concentrating on getting planning permission from Manchester City Council.

Hale Leisure, led by Clancy and fellow director Eamon Dwyer, owns ten bars in Manchester and area.

Hale Leisure, in what ever depleted form it now exists, only owns a handful of bars - possibly just Jabez and Thirsty Scholar
