Hill Dickinson strikes Halliwells deal

Manchester law firm Hill Dickinson has confirmed that it will buy the Liverpool and Sheffield operations of collapsed rival Halliwells.

“We have continued to look at strategic acquisitions to develop our business and complement our existing strengths. This opportunity provided a perfect match and enables us to work with first class and established teams in Liverpool and Sheffield.”

The transaction will see more than 19 partners, 41 fee earners and 29 support staff from Halliwells’ Liverpool office absorbed into Hill Dickinson’s St Paul’s Square headquarters.

A team comprising a further 36 people will establish a Hill Dickinson law practice in Sheffield, which will acquire health, corporate, commercial litigation and property practice groups.

The deal will bring Hill Dickinson’s headcount to more than 1,000 in the north west with a forecast fee income of £105m.

The transfer of the business was completed yesterday. Peter Jackson, managing partner of Hill Dickinson, said: “We feel strongly that both the businesses are highly complementary in terms of client base and skill set. There are many highly talented lawyers within the Halliwells' teams, which are one of the leading commercial practices in their respective cities, and they will fit well into the client-focused service we offer here at Hill Dickinson.

“We have continued to look at strategic acquisitions to develop our business and complement our existing strengths. This opportunity provided a perfect match and enables us to work with first class and established teams in Liverpool and Sheffield.”

Halliwells, which is based in Spinningfields in Manchester, went into administration last month.

Hill Dicks are actually a Liverpool firm with offices in Manchester.

Large solicitors charge out their services at an hourly rate (depending on the seniority of the employee/partner doing the work.) No doubt these are competative.. that it they charge what the other firms charge. And as they amalgamate (not just these two), the number of other firms decreases.

How can we judge if they are efficient?
