Heal's Discount Night

Published on November 25th 2005.

Now unlike all the other girls in the Man Con offices I hate shopping. However with a large family who are all expecting full stockings come Christmas Day I felt it was about time I got on with it and the Christmas 10% Discount Event that was happening at Heal’s last night seemed as a good a place to start as any.

Such 10% discount evenings are usually reserved for Heal’s top customers, however, Manchester Confidential had managed to get our readers on the exclusive guest list for an evening of live music, food tasting, beauty demonstrations, product displays, giveaways and drinks. So, determined to get down there before all our readers snapped up the best gifts I set off.

I was greeted by a particularly friendly chap at the door called Simon, who as the Retail Operations & Logistics Director of Heal’s possibly has the longest title in the world. Simon took the time to guide me around the store, from home furnishings, to kitchenware, right through to Beauty and Gifts. From Build Your Own Website kits (obviously no-one in the Man Con office would need one of these!) to rainbow hot water bottles to red chandeliers, Gordo was right for once – Heal’s really does have something for everyone. I was then guided towards the chocolate fountain for a sweet treat and a cheeky glass of red wine. A great start.

Whilst the event was pleasantly busy (with Manchester Confidential readers outnumbering Heal’s top customers by 3 to 1) it was a long way from those panicked Saturday’s spent charging around the city centre in the run up to Christmas desperately trying to find a suitable gift for Great Aunt Mavis. The store is laid out beautifully, but not so beautifully that you feel afraid to touch anything, the staff are exceptionally helpful and are more than happy to spend five minutes with you explaining exactly how the latest gadget works. Free hand massages were available, using I Coloniali and Neal’s Yards products that are both on sale in the store. Everyone was given a goody bag crammed, and I mean crammed, with scrumptious smelling products including lip balms and hand creams. With two teenage daughters you can bet your life I won’t ever lay eyes on my goody bag again!

I spotted Manchester Confidential’s MD, Andrew Mullet, attempting to balance a huge box under his arm as he continued to mooch. Andy is well known in our office for being, shall we say, a bit thrifty and bets had been being taken all day as to whether his pockets were indeed sewn up. However, never one to miss out on a good deal, Andy couldn’t resist the 10% discount and had purchased a gift for his lovely fiancée. Denise, may I apologise in advance for what you’re going to unwrap on Christmas Day. Instead of a gorgeous lace mirror, a gift set of Molton Brown products or a fantastic flock chandelier for your boudoir, Andy’s chosen you a cat food dispenser. A very kitsch and funky one, but still a cat food dispenser? I think you’ll forgive me for ruining the surprise.

Entertainment came in the form of a roulette table, complete with French croupier, although his French accent was rather dubious. After at least 100 goes, Andy hadn’t managed to muster up his lucky streak and as we walked away a Man Con reader yelped as red 17 had won her a coffee maker. Not bad.

All in all it was a great night, Andrea the CEO of Heal’s had made an extra special visit from London for the event and has let me in on a few secrets about some up and coming initiatives Heal’s will be running in the New Year involving Manchester design talent, so watch this space!

Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get any presents, after all, somebody had to help Andrew Mullett carry the cat food dispenser! However I have got LOADS of ideas and thankfully Heal’s are running another 10% Discount Event on Thursday 1st December from 6 – 9pm. So, if like me you didn’t manage to get everything you need, or if you missed it, don’t panic! To get yourself on the exclusive guest list just click here!
