For the bands, it's a chance to get heard by a panel of Manchester music industry professionals and musicians. The four finalists will get exposure and will showcase their talent in front of thousands of fans and the big-hitting bands that play Hard Rock Calling.

Headliners at Hard Rock Calling in previous years have included Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, The Who, Pearl Jam, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, The Killers and The Police. This year's Saturday night headliner is Bon Jovi.

They’ll be competing for the top prize with bands from across the world. (There are 74 cities taking part). But as everyone knows, there is nowhere more rock and roll than Manchester.

An expert panel including Little Steven Van Zandt of the E Street Band, Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, and Live Nation Vice President of Promotions Toby Leighton-Pope will help narrow down the choices from across the globe. Then top bands will be posted on www.hardrock.com, and rock fans worldwide will vote on their favourites.

The four finalists will be flown to London, treated like rock stars and given a spot on the bill at Hard Rock Calling 2011. Only one band will open for one of the festival’s headliners on the Main Stage. The band that receives the most votes will take the Main Stage at Hard Rock Calling, with the runners-up rockin’ out on the Second Stage.

There will also be a prize for the Manchester winner of a weekend's recording studio time at the legendary RADIUM studios with KC, and Guitar Hero prizes for the band members too.

The Manchester rounds take place on Thursday 3 March, Thursday 10 March and Thursday 17 March at 8pm.

It's free entry and there's cheap drinks until 9pm. Go along to see Manchester's emerging talent and vote for the band that should represent our city.
