Half Year Footfall and Sales Up At The Arndale

THE ARNDALE Centre has seen a rise in its half year footfall and sales figures compared to 2010.

The shopping centre has also claimed a strong start of the second half of the year thanks to a record breaking third week of August.

"The record-breaking footfall figures in August demonstrate how successful the ‘I love MCR’ campaign has been for the city."

Footfall is currently recorded at around 18.9 million which is up 6.8 per cent on the first half of last year, or 1.2 million extra between January and July.

During the week of the Manchester riots, which happened on August 9, footfall decreased by around 10 per cent with the centre recording a reduction of around 40 per cent customers and sales.

The ‘I love MCR’ campaign helped the centre attract 2.3 million people into the centre in the following three weeks however. The third week in particular recorded an increase of 12.6 per cent in footfall year-on-year hitting around 812,000 people.

Sales are up 7.3 per cent across all sectors, with the best performing areas including mobile phones and electrical goods, up by 77.6 per cent; health and beauty (34 per cent); menswear (8.5 per cent) and the Foodcourt saw a seven per cent increase in fast-food sales.

Sue Anderson-Brown, interim general manager for Manchester Arndale said: “These are a very strong set of first half-year results for Manchester Arndale and in particular the record-breaking footfall figures in August demonstrate how successful the ‘I love MCR’ campaign has been for the city and is testament to the public support shown following the national disturbances.

"To have already exceeded last year’s October half-term week, being the largest footfall week outside of Christmas, is a very big achievement.

"Overall, most of our 240 retailers repeated positive sales results and in particular we saw health and beauty sales rise significantly in this period."

Former centre manager Glenn Barkworth left the Arndale last week after ten years at the helm.

Makes for good headlines but every shop now holds virtually a year-round sale, so it's not surprising. A better way of judging the state of retail would be by spend per head
