Get your skates on

Hurray! This Christmas Manchester will be just that extra bit special, as an open air ice rink comes to Piccadilly gardens…

Get your skates on

There are two images that spring to mind when I think of ice skating. One is the traditional view of jolly, wholesome people skating happily on a frozen lake in ear muffs and reindeer jumpers before going home for a glass of mulled wine in front of the fire.

The other, more realistic image, is drawn from memories of being knocked to the ground at Altrincham ice rink by 13 year old speed skating scally-wags all off their rockers on white lightening.

Hopefully the new ice rink in Piccadilly Gardens may turn out to be a happy compromise between the two, with its open air aspect slightly reminiscent of the New York Rockefeller Centre (if you squint a bit).

Piccadilly’s open air ice rink will be an extremely exciting addition to Manchester over Christmas, whether we all get knocked over by scary speed skating children or not.

And the best bit is that it will be open until 9.30 in the evening, so we can skate under the stars surrounded by Piccadilly’s twinkly Christmas lights after spending an evening Christmas shopping.

Hurray for Bruntwood, Manchester City council and Argent, who have all pulled their clever heads together to bring us the ice rink for Christmas.
