Geoffrey Miller

The Christmas period and its drink driving clampdown may be fast becoming a distant memory, but that doesn’t mean that we can afford to take more risks when it comes to drink driving. Each year in Britain, over 400 people are killed in accidents in which excess alcohol plays a part, with thousands more seriously injured.

But what is “excess alcohol?” Hands up who actually knows what the legal limit is. I don’t know about you, but I was extremely surprised to find out that the limit for people of average weight (12-13 st for men, 9-10 st for women) is a measly one unit. That’s one 125ml glass of wine – bearing in mind that a small pub measure of wine is 175ml, one 25ml measure of spirits, or half a pint of beer.

And even sticking to one unit isn’t a sure fire way of avoiding a run-in with the law. Alcohol reacts differently in different people, and is dependent upon lots of different factors including levels of hydration, how much the person has eaten, how fast the drink is consumed etc, so your safest bet is just not to drink at all.

Something else that not many people know – being caught in charge of a motor vehicle while over the limit can lead to a prison sentence and a hefty fine. You can even be charged with ‘being in charge’ before you turn the engine on if police suspect that you were intending to drive, and you don’t need to be on a public road either – get behind a wheel in a pub car park and you could be in trouble.

If you’ve taken any risks and been caught out over the Christmas period or even since then, you’ll probably need some help getting out of your sticky situation. That’s where Geoffrey Miller Solicitors come in. Specialising in motoring law, Geoffrey Miller defends motorists nationwide for all types of driving related offences, including alcohol related ones.
