Gaydio: Out and proud

Gaydio. It’s gay, and it’s radio. Whichever genius thought up this name needs a medal. Launching next month, Gaydio will be a new radio station for Manchester’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Gaydio, the first project of its kind in the UK, will be broadcasting from the village from August 15th. The intention is that the station will initially broadcast for a two week period to coincide with the Manchester Pride festival in August.

Programme Controller, Toby Whitehouse, said “There’s so much going on in the Gay Village over the Summer; there is a real buzz. We wanted to create something that would compliment that, allowing people to feel really in touch with all that’s going on and contribute to that buzz.”

The station should provide an excellent way to unite the gay community and enhance the support and community spirit that already exists for Manchester’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population. Let’s hope though that it shows a little imagination and avoids tarring the whole of Manchester’s gay community with the same Kylie/Madonna/Abba brush. Not that I have anything against a bit of cheese you understand. Just that common sense tells me that ‘coming out’ doesn’t necessarily bring with it a set of terms and conditions that automatically sentence your ear drums to a life of poppy hairbrush hits, as some other gay music projects would have us believe.

Ian Wallace, Gaydio Project Manager said “A project of this scale will obviously demand a great deal of financial support. The project will be a first for Manchester, and the UK, so the exposure and benefits for supporters will be huge” The team behind Gaydio are looking to secure support from organisations of all shapes and sizes, which may not necessarily be financial. Interested parties should contact Ian on 07961 126373.

Gaydio will operate as a not for profit community project and organisers are keen for as many people to get involved as possible. The station’s frequency has not yet been announced, but keep checking www.gaydio.co.uk for up to date news and more details.
