GMP faces £4.4m riot compensation bill

THE Greater Manchester Police Authority has received 280 compensation claims following the August riots - including one for £40 from Tesco.

According to a story in the Telegraph  this weekend, GMP has received claims totalling £4.4m, but claims there is 'no guarantee' it would be able to afford all of the compensation.

"Punishing the police for the disorder is a bit like punishing the NHS when there is a flu epidemic."

Tesco has submitted more than 20 claims for compensation to GMP, including one for looted stock worth £40, although that has now been withdrawn with the retailer claiming it was an 'administrative error.'

Other large food retailers, such as Sainsbury's, have not submitted any claims, however.

"I would like to encourage other large retailers to consider Sainsbury's stance," he told the Telegraph.

"We want to help small businesses and sole traders but punishing the police for the disorder is a bit like punishing the NHS when there is a flu epidemic."

Ehm, you knew what was coming after Tottenham.

If you feel the flue coming up, you vaccinate (long term approach) or go to the sauna and sweat it out when feeling queasy (short term approach).

They have been the victim of a crime, its not really imoral or moraly low ground to ask for compensation is it.

I'm pretty sure the their so big they can aford it argument is the same one that people use when puting in false whiplash claims following a minor collision, or when adding a few hundred quid to the home insurance claim post buglary. And we do all know thats wrong dont we...

Sir Peter should know better.

its a diabolical situtaion that the police now find themselves in... why should they have to pay out for the "MORONS" of this world... why we are paying for the rest of the world to survive Great Britain is going down the pan... we should be looking are own country first and not be sending all this relief money and paying benefits to NON residents... this country is an absolute joke

Benefits for non-residents? Sun reader, hey?

Do you realise that as a bank account holder, YOU are paying the bankers bonuses?

Tesco on Oxford Rd/St James' building didn't even fix the broken window or cash machine for 3 weeks.

Surely they have service level agreements with their maintenance provider that would mean windows etc get fixed quicker than that? And that's regardless of who would finally foot the bill.

It felt like they were just proving a point by leaving it boarded up.

Just wanted to moan about that. Thanks for listening. (Well, reading).

On a more positive note, apparently we all love MCR! Although Gerard Way isn't really my pop-up-teacup.

What and where are we going, the Police defend you - that is agressive to some factions, they do not help you - that is the uncaring side of the Police to some factions. They now have to pay for crime committed by others that if they chased down and appehended would sue for assault.

If you loose something you claim off your insurance - lets have each citizen responsible for their own actions.
