Furries storm Manchester

New sub-culture arrives and makes a pig of itself...and a bear, a wolf and a dragon

Published on May 26th 2009.

Another strand of Americana has hit the city.

Perhaps the wholesale adoption of American fashions began when the teenager was invented in the 1950s and Elvis appeared on the scene.

If so it’s all gone a bit crazier of late.

This lot pictured here were spotted over the weekend. We’re used to the emos outside Urbis but now the Furries have arrived.

In that wayward, but occasionally accurate, resource that is Wikipedia this is how the phenomenon is described.

‘Furry fandom (also known as furrydom, furridom, fur fandom or furdom) refers to the fandom for fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes.’

Right.

The Furry invasion manifested itself in Castlefield. Here they are swarming over the Roman Fort.

Despite the fact they ‘creeped out’ our friend Eliza who sent the pics in, Confidential thinks that anything creative that adds to life’s rich gamut in Manchester is just grand. But then we weren't there.

This has been going on since comics have existed. It then evolved into role playing on the internet. Really only the nerdiest kids got involved (me) or those into illustration (me)

OMG Furverts!May 26th 2009.

I do hope there was no 'yiffing' in evidence on those hallowed ramparts.

The event concerned is called ConFuzzled. It was held over at the YHA - they just went for a little field trip. Its site (confuzzled.org.uk) is down since the event's over for the year, but there's some info at http://wikifur.com/ConFuzzledYou can see a video of the activities here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XfcNhR40uasSarah: They tend not to speak because that might break the illusion, similar to theme park characters.Jumpers: I have plenty of photos. See http://flickr.com/photos/greenreaper/setsDidsbury: It's a fetish for some, but that's like saying goth is a fetish for some. It's more a community and a fandom. Think a mix of trekkies and hippies, with fur. We mostly make our own content - there's lots of amateur artists and writers (see artspots.com, furaffinity.net).
