TRANSPORT leaders in Greater Manchester have welcomed a national initiative that will give long-term unemployed free bus travel for the whole of January in a bid to help them find work or access training.
“I would encourage anyone eligible for a Job Centre Plus Travel Discount Card who has not yet applied for one to do so today so they are ready to reap the full benefits of this initiative before it gets under way on 1 January."
Under the scheme, launched by Greener Journeys, anyone presenting a Job Centre Plus Travel Discount Card will be able to travel for free on bus services operated by Arriva, First and Stagecoach, as well as cross-boundary services run by Network Warrington and Trent Barton.
In response to the initiative, Transport for Greater Manchester will be providing the same offer on the Metrolink network.
Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “This is an encouraging move and one that we will watch with interest – anything that helps people who have been struggling to find work over a prolonged period should be welcomed and I certainly hope it makes a difference.

“I’m pleased to say we’ll be providing the same offer on the Metrolink network, which will open up even more travel options for card-holders in Greater Manchester.”

No doubt my monthly metrolink pass will go up again.....
Good idea. A Bury resident aged 16-24 travelling to an interview in the city centre at 9am would need to pay £5.60, which is a big chunk (10%) of the £56.25/week JSA.
How many people will actually use this to go to an interview I wonder, rather than a jolly day out in town?
....sad to see that prejudiced runs so deep. this card has helped me stay in contact with my partner who has had to take a job 63 miles from home. I take our child to visit one night a week and he comes home at weekends. our business folded 3 years ago and he was u/e for 18 months... me I am long term sick due to 2 x frozen shoulders and joint problems. Without hubby being here i cannot buy shopping too heavy to carry home from shops...now i can afford to with this travel scheme. I am not a job seeker and was only made aware of this scheme a few weeks ago. It has made my family life a little easier and together!!! not all job seekers u/e should be tarred with the same brush. And one more thing... my adviser & her manager both denied this scheme existed until i showed them info from the web !!!! its difficult enough dealing with a service that is not fit for purpose and then to be faced with uninformed prejudiced people like yourself...
What about student travel?
