Exclusive: Brakes on 8pm parking plan

Decision to make no decision revealed at 11th hour after pay-and-display proposal sparks fury

Exclusive: Brakes on 8pm parking plan

Liverpool Confidential has learned that the decision to charge motorists to park in the city centre up until 8pm has been put on hold.

Three weeks ago we invited you to fill out an email to the city council executive board letting them know what you thought of their crazy, business damaging plan to increase parking charges from 6pm to 8pm in the city centre. (click here for the story).

Several hundred of you did just that, and this morning Warren Bradley, Flo Clucas, Peter Millea and the gang received the job lot in their inboxes.

We sent them ahead of a crucial Town Hall meeting tonight, which will ratify the controversial Lib Dem budget plan. The Labour group, on behalf of anyone in their right mind, will be asking for a pay and display rethink.

Any dissenters in the Lib Dem ranks could decide to swap sides and force the whole thing to be thrown out.

But before that, a message comes to Liverpool Confidential from Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration.

“This matter has already been considered by the Regeneration Select Committee, and a Scrutiny Panel has been set up to look at all aspects of car parking in the City Centre, including those areas where parking is abused. When the Panel reports back in June, it will have had the opportunity to identify alternative proposals to the one being considered today.”

In other words, we're putting it on a back burner, so can we please talk about something else now?

It seems clear the council has been stung by the widespread feeling against its parking charge proposals, with Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and businesses across the city chipping in to the debate. However could we really expect a voluntary U-Turn so soon after Warren vetoed the also-crazy axing of lollipop men last month?

This should not be viewed as a ‘victory’ for motorists. The panel may come back and say charges should be made till 8pm or even later. But will they?

Meanwhile, we also took the liberty of cc'ing Joe Anderson, Labour opposition leader, into your emails and he replied to you lot, with this: “Thank you for your comments about the Council's plans to extend parking charges in Liverpool City centre from 6pm to 8pm.

I believe this to be an unfair tax at a time when businesses are feeling the pressure of the economic downturn.

Those in business who rely on the evening economy are being punished, as Leader of the Labour Group on the Council I will do all I can to overturn this ludicrous decision. The City Council should be working with you now to ensure that you can come through this difficult period and not making things harder. I hope they are listening to mine and your views and do the right thing.

Best wishes

Councillor Joe Anderson

Labour Party Leader"

I've seen Bradley in the Mount Pleasant car park right by the ramps on one of the lower floors, about a year ago. It was a tight turn and unfortunately I saw him too late and missed him.

well done LC, this snide and secretive lib dem exec board would of slid this in along with the other cuts they are planning, now they have been found out they have backtracked rather than losing votes next year....boot them out!!!!

It's extraordinary, isn't it, how the city councillors in charge still, after everything has happened, make these foolish decisions that are bound to cause them to look even more ridiculous. Who's running their press and PR? Imbeciles?

Probably. But Bradley drives a fire engine and therefore can go more or less where he wants.

Normally normalMarch 4th 2009.

In the old days,of course, before Liverpool City Council decided that parking charges would be a cash cow, residents could park outside their own front door. Sorry, the whole thing stinks.

I live on Falkner Street. With work, I change car maybe once every week or two. As such I can't have a permit. I get to use 50 visitor day-permits for six months and pay for the rest. I share with two mates, this means we can have two friends to visit a week, separate to me having the audacity to drive. I apologise to the Council for wanting to park by my house. If *anyone* could help, please let LC know :(
