Dancin' in the Square

If you’re at a loose end this Sunday, get on your dancing shoes and get down to Albert Square for some good old fashioned fun the way it was back in the day, before TV, when people had to make their own entertainment.

To celebrate National Veterans’ Day 2006, Albert Square will be transformed into a giant dancefloor with music and dancing from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s.

Hopefully this is one event that Pat Karney won’t cancel in the interests of public safety, although we all know that those veterans can get a bit rowdy, so he’d better keep an eye on things just in case.

Tribute artists in full costume will perform the music of Vera Lynn, The Andrew Sisters and George Formby, while big band music will come courtesy of Swing’s the Thing, who will be taking the event into the 1950’s with some Sinatra classics before Rock n Roll takes centre stage.

Councillor Val Stevens, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council said:

"27 June is the first national veterans' day, announced by the Minister for Veterans earlier this year. The aim is to raise awareness of all who have served in the armed forces and to remind people that some veterans are still young and active. We hope that the celebrations organised by Manchester City Council will fulfill this aim and provide an enjoyable event for people of all ages."

So get your gladrags on, polish up on your fox trot, and get yourself down to Albert Square on Sunday for some good, clean fun. Just try not to have too much fun - Pat Karney could be watching you.
