Daily Mail distorts GMP truth

The Daily Mail has landed itself in hot water with Greater Manchester Police after reporting the force was taking ‘politeness lessons’ from department store staff.

The newspaper claimed this morning that The John Lewis group’s Cheadle store was training 300 officers in Greater Manchester ‘to be more professional and considerate’ when dealing with victims of crime.

It said the training had been introduced after a survey revealed some officers ‘answered their mobile phones while talking to people or had unprofessional musical ring tones.’ The article headline claimed that ‘rudeness claims’ had ‘soared’.

GMP issued a statement following the story’s publication, which said: “As a result of inaccurate coverage in some of today’s media about John Lewis staff providing customer service training for police officers in Bolton, GMP would like to point out that this aspect of the story is untrue.

“John Lewis, along with a number of other organisations, was visited to look for any areas of best practice that could be incorporated into Greater Manchester Police’s ongoing internal training that is provided to officers.

“No staff from John Lewis are involved in this training.”

Superintendent Nadeem Butt, who was behind the idea, said that although a visit was made to John Lewis, and a number of other organisations, to look at customer service, all training was still carried out internally by GMP officers and staff.
