Budget cuts will leave Manchester without a creative director

Council cuts Peter Saville's wage

Manchester City Council has discontinued its funding contribution towards the role of Creative Director for Manchester which has been been carried out by Peter Saville.

The Council is fully supportive of the strategy being developed by Marketing Manchester and other partner organisations to find alternative funding sources which will enable this valuable post to continue.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "The severity of the budget cuts we face means the Council can no longer fund the role of Creative Director and Peter's contract with us will finish at the end of March.

"He has made an important contribution as Creative Director over recent years with his talent - and passion for Manchester - has helped define how Manchester has presented itself to the world. He has been instrumental in projects including international exhibitions and festivals, the city's cultural strategy and the new Metrolink design.

"As an internationally-respected designer he has also been an effective ambassador for Manchester on the world stage and I'm glad plans are being developed to ensure he can continue to make a contribution."

Oh my god!!! Who's gonna design the city's wrapping paper this year? I am SICK of these government cuts. I just can't live in a city that doesn't have someone visit every couple of months, draw some squiggly lines on a piece of paper and f**k off back to London pissing himself, to wipe his bum on 20 pound notes...

You clearly never met Saville. He thought long and hard about the city and was interesting everytime he spoke about it. Maybe you should get back to the MEN comment section and join the other small minded people who have no strategic perspective.

Caught one! And it's a pompous one! 17 minutes. Slightly longer than I thought but it is Friday afternoon... There are a lot of people who talk interestingly and passionately about Manchester without mugging off its citizens for a fortune. Strategic perspective? Come off it. Just an excuse to cling on to Manchester's past.

Hallelujah! Manchester does not need a "creative director" to come up a few times a month from London and pontificate about his "original modern" toss.

He hasn't lived in Manchester since the late 70s. Finger on the creative pulse in Manchester?

I doff my cap to him though, he's had the front and the cheek to make a one man cottage industry off the back of a few club flyers and record sleeves from the 70s and 80s.

Manchester must lose it's obsession with the FAC/Madchester era. It's come and gone, and it's getting a bit like the way Liverpool fetishises The Beatles.

Marketing Manchester is also worth closer investigation as to how much money it receives, pays out, and actually generates. Controversial Councillor Pat Karney is on the board at Marketing Manchester. How much does that cost to keep another snout in that juicy trough?

This lavish gravy train must come to a halt.

Isn't 'front' and 'cheek' what got Manchester where it is today?!
Saville's 'internationalness' is what makes his perspective on the City so useful. He cares deeply about his home town but is not sentimental about it. He is also unusual as a creative in that he really 'gets' cities and what makes them tick, economically and technologically as well as culturally. I totally understand why MCC can't find the funding to continue his contract, but hope that Marketing Manchester find other ways to keep him involved in the City.
His work since the 80s has been extensive in music and fashion - most recently he designed the England Team's football kit for Umbro. So those people who hark back to the 80s are maybe themselves the ones who are really obsessed with 'Madchester'?
