Coronation Street Set To Re-open

City centre set to temporarily re-open to fans in 2014

Coronation Street Set To Re-open

THE CORRIE SET on the Granada site close to MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry) should re-open to visitors and fans in March 2014.

It will be a temporary re-opening initially for six months until September 2014.

Several decades of fans used to the three-quarter scale set will now have the opportunity to stroll the street where so much of the soap opera's drama has taken place.

Since it was announced that a new set for the most famous TV street in the UK would be built at MediaCityUK, Confidential has called for retention of the city centre set as a useful boost to the already improving city centre tourist trade.

Several decades of fans used to the three-quarter scale set will now have the opportunity to stroll the street where so much of the soap opera's drama has taken place.

Continuum (perfect name) will operate the attraction. They already run attractions such as The Real Mary King's Close in Edinburgh and Oxford Castle Unlocked. Their partners will be Mather & Co run by Chris Mather, former director of ITV's Granada Tours. Mather will design and develop the six month project.

Before proceeding to formal planning permission an exhibition is planned, by invitation only on Thursday this week at the Granada HQ building in Atherton Street for local residents, businesses and stakeholders. As stated, this is by invitation only.

In its heyday Granada Studios Tour centred on 'the Street' attracted more than half a million visitors a year. It provided a mighty slice of the tourist cake. Interest should still be very high with a re-opened city centre set. If so the temporary 'reveal' for six months next year might be turned into a permanent one.

Let's hope that consultation goes well and the plan goes ahead.

Interesting news. Is this exclusive the result of Mr Ingall's invitation to pop to his office?

The question being, will the Rover's Return?

It would be so stupid and shortsighted to get rid of this set. But then again it was stupid to dump a load of uninspiring concrete in Piccadilly Gardens, so i won't be surprised if it's knocked down.

Jonathan, would you be able to ask Deloitte or Continuum if they see this temporary re-opening of the Corrie set as an opportunity to say a fond farewell to it or as a tester to see how popular it might be as a permanent tourist attraction? I've never been on the set myself and although it's only three-quarter scale I'm sure it'd be possible to build a full-sized pub behind the Rover's Return facade. How fabulous to have it as one's local!

I'm so happy about this news! I used to work at the tours before it closed and would love to again. Any ideas how I can go about this? Any help or information would be enormously appreciated!

Loved it years ago, can't wait for it to reopen and hopefully become a permanent fixture on the Manchester scene again.

IAN C What a good idea to open 'The Rovers Return' as a proper pub,it would do a lot of trade as bored fathers would pop in for a jar, whilst the missus and kids look round the set. Get the licences applied for.

Missed a great chance to see the original Granada Studios Tour so looking forward to the chance to tread the cobbles and taste a pint of authentic Newton & Ridleys at The Rovers. Wonder what the kebabs are like at Dev's?

Tonight's exhibition was really well attended and the local residents invited were pretty enthusiastic about a reopening. There are some traffic issues to be addressed, but plenty of positive ideas to take forward. It won't be exactly like the old Granada Studio Tours as it will be just Corrie, but it won't be just the outdoor set either.

Cant wait for the official announcement and get the full go ahead to open yeahy!!! Brilliant...I loved the old Granada Studio Tours. As Joan has mention it will be just Corrie???... I do not think that a lot people would be to happy about that...wouldn't fill the day for a family day out really. Honestly the kids would be bored stiff being dragged all the internal sets...they will be hit with complaint after complaint, if they don't think this through properly. It will be on Granada Reports its is closing its earlier than planned due to complaints and lack of visitor numbers... Listen right...Granada Studios has been the home and heart of thousands of TV productions not just Corrie... Granada Tours needs to take on board. Keeping entrance costs at Realistic prices getting the people through those gates, because merchandise and food will always be sold no matter what the price tag. Including other interactive guide lead tours around the complex, as done previously i.e. Gallery Tours let people have ago in the gallery, use old used sets people will recognise anyway, set up a studio for Granada Reports to do interactive things, like having ago presenting and reading auto cues, let people have ago using the cameras, there must a lot of unused wardrobe and make up areas, so people can see all the different props available i.e. The Anthony Cotton Show props will be there somewhere lol. Make up get the kids involved with face painting and show how make up/special effects are used in may ways showing injuries, blood, cuts etc... Game shows filmed at the studios to be set up n interact as audience members to show how a studio is set for programmes... Jeremy Kyle Show has become a hugh part of Granada and successfully gone worldwide. Open up the old Kyle studios everyone can become involved. All pre-scripted get people having a go, taking part and having a good time...Kyle presenter - visitor, guests on show - visitor, again letting people try autocue and all behind the scenes of show production etc...Bring into it children's programmes that have been filmed at Granada allowing people to see old studio sets of programmes they have watched. I have a lot more ideas to offer this opportunity for Granada it will work if they do the whole thing properly... Open it all, as I have mentioned and this will be allowed to stay permanently...worldwide reviews, compliments, thank yous, No Negative Comments, repeat customers, fantastic recommendations to others, North Wests tourism has increased greatly and what all companies want is... More sponsors for the Tours meaning expanding/growth meaning the making BIG Profits doing well. Then allowing to expand fully..I Have finished now.Zoey X

Have a great time in Manchester. The Museum of Science and Industry, next door to Granada, is worth a visit.
