Confidential announces another Daniel Johnston gig

Way to go fella. Daniel Johnston, the troubled troubadour of California and erstwhile cartoonist has sold out. Not in an artistic sense of course but in the Manchester Confidential gig manner. All five hundred tickets for his show at the Comedy Store on 21 May have been, we’re proud to say, snapped up.

And there’s demand for more. So we’ve got him to do another gig the day after.

That means that the only two headlining shows for this important and influential artist will both take place in Manchester. And both will have been promoted by Manchester’s only independent magazine: Manchester Confidential. There are no other gigs planned in the UK with Daniel top of the bill.

Support acts announced. Jeffrey Lewis to fly over from New York, UK folk hero Adem and local boys The Former Bullies

Johnston has been described as, ‘one of the world’s greatest living songwriters by a who’s who of rock luminaries including Tom Waits, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. Artists indebted to his sound include Beck, Jeffrey Lewis, The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.’ Even The Simpson’s creator Matt Groening is a big fan. A documentary about Johnston, The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005) by Jeff Feuerzeig, won the Directors’ Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. He is a well-regarded artist not just for his music but also through his drawings and paintings, which have been exhibited in galleries across the world.

Daniel Johnston’s second night is 22 May, the venue, The Comedy Store.

Tickets are £15. Please contact Ticketline: www.ticketline.co.uk

Support Acts

British singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Adem Ilhan writes pastoral pop that's augmented by eclectic instrumentation and wistful and irreverent lyrics. He began recording in his teens as the bass player for the popular post-rock trio Fridge, recording four full-length records and releasing numerous singles and EPs. In 2003 he signed with Domino, home to a diverse group of artists including Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys. He released his debut (Homesongs) in 2004, followed by Love and Other Planets in 2006

You may have last seen him in Manchester at The Bridgewater Hall playing the Zero Degrees of Seperation show with Vashti Bunyan, Vetiver and Juana Molina

Jeffrey Lewis
Flying over from New York especially for the event.“The best lyricist working in the US today.” - Jarvis Cocker/Pulp
“…Remarkable offbeat talent… it’s only a matter of time before Lewis becomes an indie hero.” - The Independent

The Former Bullies
These local boys have been causing a stir for couple of years now, always on the cusp of breaking through. But it looks like their time is now. With a Scandinavian tour with The Lemonheads, and a sold out show at the London Koko, things finally seem to be going in the right direction for The Former Bullies.
