City News in 250 Words: Wednesday September 21

A MAN who died in a house fire, that also left a woman and her three children critically injured, may have set himself alight. Dave Potts was found with serious burns after the fire in Broadheath but Tracey Jones and her three children, aged four, 15 and 18, managed to escape. Greater Manchester Police are now investigating the possibility that Mr Potts started the fire in some kind of human fireball attempt.

MANCHESTER CITY are attempting to improve the atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium by introducing a singing section. The move, which will relocate fans who wish to make plenty of noise to the South Stand, will come into force for the Champions League game against Villarreal next month. Whilst the switch is on a trial basis, it is likely to be repeated at league games. Away fans will be moved to the third tier of the East Stand.

A TEENAGE girl in Bury has admitted slashing another girl’s face with a razor. Sabby Mir, 18, was attacked by the 16-year-old in an underpass off Haymarket Street. The teenager admitted wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm at Bolton Crown Court.

STUDENTS are calling for swift action after moving into their new accommodation to find holes kicked in doors, missing showerheads and filthy carpets. The complaints are in regards to Manchester Student Village in Lower Chatham Street. The company that runs the accommodation, MCR Students, has said they do their best to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.

Why are the students fussy? Shouldn't anyone in rented accommodation expect a certain level of repair and cleanliness?

Laura. there's a difference to being fussy and wanting an acceptable level of cleanliness; just because they're students it shouldn't mean they should put up with a filthy environment to live in.

MIKE_A. Think we're making the same point; I think 'fussy' is the wrong choice of word. They absolutely *should* have suitable accomm.

The Student Village has always been a dump. Guessing that the only reason they're still attracting students is because they're cheap compared to the other accommodation providers.

The Manchester Student Village is known for having the highest suicide rate of any student digs. People joke that the MSV stands for 'mass suicide village'.

That really is quite startling

It used to be dire when my mates lived there. Feel sorry for the poor buggers who end up there!

MCR student aka MCR property group. Quality, service and value are 3 words that are banned from being spoken in their office...it's a shame that the MSV will be the first and most lasting impression of Manchester for so many newcomers to the city.

Does anyone remember squatting the deck-access Crescents in Hulme?

If you might be interested in the modern architecture (as I think some of those in Hulme may be...), the Manchester Modernist Society will have a screening of "Utopia London" at University on Thursday. It's London's, but maybe interesting... I think it's free, by the way.
